I always recommend The Ball Is Round by David Goldblatt. It’s a worldwide history of the growth of football. Universally accepted by writers working in the football area as the greatest football book ever written. It should be compulsory reading for people before they’re allowed inside a ground or on a forum.
There’s also a few Eng Lang country specific histories of the game: Morbo-Spain, Tor-Germany, Calcio-Italy etc. The Wilson lad of Sunderland stock has knocked out an Argentinian one titles Angels With Dirty Faces which I’ve not yet got round too which comes highly recommended.
