Everyone’s favourite fake aristocrat and Brexit advocate Jacob Rees Mogg has gone on record proclaiming the abolition of tariffs, particularly on food and particularly how this will benefit the poor. He even promoted a dodgy hypothetical shopping basket article in the sun about how leaving the customs union would lead to a reduction in food prices. There were likely Latin phrases and everything to emphasise the point.
One of the principal reasons given for Brexit was that we could lower tariffs on food from outside the EU, and reduce the cost of food shopping, if we were no longer inside the CU.
Today Michael Gove let slip this little nugget to farmers saying that in the event of no deal, it won't happen. That in fact, tariffs will be imposed on imports to protect UK farmers.
