I certainly felt that way before the tournament although he played well the first two games. I think we have to have Walker in the team just for his pace more than anything, Stones and Maguire aren’t the fastest, Walker can cover ground quickly.I'd rather Walker than Mings. Don't trust him at all.
But in weakening the team you lower the chance of even reaching penaltiesTrue, but its a reasonable possibility, especially if he's going to be playing with a defensive set up.
Another possibility, there are lots of different paths this could take, though his current form/fitness doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that will happen, especially with the system we have been playing. There's also the possibility that someone else might start n his place & score the winner.
I presume you'd agree that if the game goes to penalties you'd both want Kane to take one?
You'd have to balance that against how likely it is to go to extra time (and penalties) vs us winning or losing the game outright with Kane starting or not starting and if its not decided in normal time can we afford a passenger in extra time in the hope that he is more likely than not to score one of the penalties? As a consequence of him starting the game he could be so ineffective in extra time that we end up losing before penalties.
It may be just a simple case of saying he's our best centre forward so should start, but I think its a bit naive to rule out the possibility of extra time & penalties and the associated implications, given his form & fitness levels.
I don't know whether he should start or not by the way, Southgate should have a better understanding of his fitness & form in training. I'm just saying I can understand the logic in him coming on at half time.
Almost. We had Sterling and Kane up top last time, this looks like a threeIt’s the WC2018 formation - Walker played on the right of a 3 all tournament.
Agents apparently do it but I don't know whyIf this is the line up, what does England gain from having it leaked. The bloke who’s leaked it is obviously a massive plum.
It sounds like it is that but with Tripper and ShawIt'll be this I reckon, but without Trippier
So have we.They played David Villa as a striker.
Hungary have played a back three for a couple of years now.
Saka is rumoured to be playing up top though. I agree about Henderson. If fit, he should be in for PhillipsAye, but Hungary changed to back three and controlled the came against Germany, so that's probably more relevant.
I'm not against the shape, its probably sensible v Germany. But I do think its negative personnel. To not play any of your creative players relies on the pattern of the game going as you see fit - maybe Germany will be negative too and not allow Saka and Sterling space to transition on the counter? If so, then we are going to need one of our creative players.
Tough call but the choice is Saka or Shaw at LWB for me. Why not back Saka? Give Kimmich something to think about going backwards too. Create a new point of transition infield? I think it'd be a clever choice.
The other thing that worries me greatly is the lack of Henderson. We simply need him for his leadership and vertical passing ability. I think Southgate would have picked him, so can only assume he's not fit. Which is a big big worry.
Need to move rice back in between stones and Pickford then you have it
I know. I think its too clever by half. What if the game pans out differently and they sit deep and won't allow us the space to run at then. What's the f***ing plan then Southgate? He needs one of the creative players - Foden, Mount, Grealish on - or what will we do? He's overthought it.Saka is rumoured to be playing up top though. I agree about Henderson. If fit, he should be in for Phillips
Depends on form & fitness, if he plays poorly again/looks unfit tonight and we scrape through despite him not because of him you'd have ask if he is our best forward/player by reputation or what he currently offers in this brief window of time. A fit & in form Kane starts, no question.Pens are generally a lottery IF you get that far anyway. Mbappe had one saved yesterday.for example.
Having a game plan based on playing for a penalty shootout and dropping your best forward/player so he's not too tired to take one is bizarre. If we got to final would you have him on the bench every gane in case it went to pens?
You didn't answer the first question & there is no guarantee that would happen. Re your 2nd point (linked with the first) - its more about his ability to run for 90 or up to 120 minutes as opposed to how well he can kick a ball. There's no guarantee anyone will score a penalty, but he'd be more likely to score one than most of others left on the pitch (if he's still there).1. Win it in 90
2. If his form is so bad, why do you assume he'll score a penalty ?
A fit & in form Kane is our best centre forward but its debatable if starting a fit young player instead of a better player who is unfit/off form is weakening a team, especially as the better, less fit player could come on at half time & potentially play through extra time instead of starting & coming off before 90 minutes. But in weakening the team you lower the chance of even reaching penalties

Anyway, I'm hoping all the above is moot. I'm fairly sure Kane will start so I hope he has a good game, shows a bit of form & fitness, scores and we win the game in 90 minutes. I'd much rather that than win a hypothetical debate on a message board.
You might be right with that. I hope he gets it right today thoughUio
I'm not convinced it is a fitness issue tbh. I was first to say he was abysmal v Scotland (and he was) but Czechs he was fine. Southgates tactics are killing him, and others imo.
He finished the season fine. Whether he fit enough to start a game is of course a factor but not because it would affect a penalty.

AgreedHis best position, in my humble, RCB in a 3.
Saka is playing not Foden
This
Chinese whispers probably
F*cking cowardice. Nothing more and nothing less.Absolutely embarrassing, when England go out he will be hammered, but will still keep the job as the WC is next year and there is no one else, and he’s a squeaky clean yes man![]()
