Foden, Mount, Grealish, sancho

We’ve conceded the least number of goals in the tournament so far (albeit playing one game fewer than most of the teams). It would seem folly to rip that up now. I think Grealish, Sancho, Foden, etc, can make a big impact from the bench later in game against (hopefully) a tired German defence, if necessary.

Starting-wise, I can see a back three with Walker playing as a right-sided centre back alongside Maguire and Stones.

Shaw and Trippier as WBs.

Rice and Phillips a two-man midfield.

Up front Sako and Sterling supporting, either side of Kane.
Just picked that same team in my head anarl.

That is a big "if". The entire premise is based on the idea that the game will go to penalties
True, but its a reasonable possibility, especially if he's going to be playing with a defensive set up.
If Kane starts and scores what goes on to be the winning goal in the 60th min why would he need to play 120 mins?
Another possibility, there are lots of different paths this could take, though his current form/fitness doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that will happen, especially with the system we have been playing. There's also the possibility that someone else might start n his place & score the winner.

I presume you'd agree that if the game goes to penalties you'd both want Kane to take one?

You'd have to balance that against how likely it is to go to extra time (and penalties) vs us winning or losing the game outright with Kane starting or not starting and if its not decided in normal time can we afford a passenger in extra time in the hope that he is more likely than not to score one of the penalties? As a consequence of him starting the game he could be so ineffective in extra time that we end up losing before penalties.

It may be just a simple case of saying he's our best centre forward so should start, but I think its a bit naive to rule out the possibility of extra time & penalties and the associated implications, given his form & fitness levels.

I don't know whether he should start or not by the way, Southgate should have a better understanding of his fitness & form in training. I'm just saying I can understand the logic in him coming on at half time.

Pens are generally a lottery IF you get that far anyway. Mbappe had one saved yesterday.for example.

Having a game plan based on playing for a penalty shootout and dropping your best forward/player so he's not too tired to take one is bizarre. If we got to final would you have him on the bench every gane in case it went to pens?

If that is the case, i don't have particular issue with it. Fantastic options from the bench too.

3-4-3 apparently

I'd imagine it will be

Pickford

Walker
Stones
Maguire

Trippier/James
Phillips
Rice
Shaw/Trippier

Saka
Kane
Sterling

Could possibly see Henderson start instead of Phillips
It'll be this I reckon, but without Trippier

The awesome Spanish 2008-2012 team would have played 4-6-0 and defend by keeping the ball forever.

They played David Villa as a striker.

Aye, but Hungary changed to back three and controlled the came against Germany, so that's probably more relevant.

I'm not against the shape, its probably sensible v Germany. But I do think its negative personnel. To not play any of your creative players relies on the pattern of the game going as you see fit - maybe Germany will be negative too and not allow Saka and Sterling space to transition on the counter? If so, then we are going to need one of our creative players.

Tough call but the choice is Saka or Shaw at LWB for me. Why not back Saka? Give Kimmich something to think about going backwards too. Create a new point of transition infield? I think it'd be a clever choice.

The other thing that worries me greatly is the lack of Henderson. We simply need him for his leadership and vertical passing ability. I think Southgate would have picked him, so can only assume he's not fit. Which is a big big worry.
Hungary have played a back three for a couple of years now.

This purported starting team appears to have the Champ Manager lads in meltdown.

Should win then

If this is the line up, what does England gain from having it leaked. The bloke who’s leaked it is obviously a massive plum.

One man's strange argument is another man's big picture view & strategy to get the best out of your main striker in the time he is on the pitch, particularly in light of the fact that he's looked jaded in the last few games. 2 simple yes or no questions for you if the game goes to extra time & penalties:-

1. Do you think Kane (in his current form & fitness levels) would perform to a high level throughout the full 120 minutes?
2. Do you want Kane to take one of the penalties?
1. Win it in 90
2. If his form is so bad, why do you assume he'll score a penalty ?
