Let's go all out for Europe this season! ;)

On a serious note, most of us with our feet on the ground would take a top half finish this season, which would be seen as steady progress. But you also 'need' one of those big aims, an 'if everything comes off scenario' - and given our start and given we seem to have a fairly solid defense and two top strikers, there's no reason not the glance at Europe as long as we're in with a shout.

Top5 will automatically go to Europe and Top5 I think will realistically be too hard. We can't cope with Man U, Man C, Chelsea and Arsenal over 38 battles. I think we can include Spurs in that group even though they have the CL as well to focus on. But, it's likely that 6th (perhaps even 7th) will lead to a Europa League spot - and can anyone honestly say we aren't in with a chance as it looks now, to compete with Liverpool, Everton and Villa for 6th and 7th?

Liverpool have big problems and have a far too cautious approach under Roy that'll cost them many points. Torres is beginning to make noise but aren't close to the Torres of old yet. Their team isn't look strong enough for a certain Top7 finish if you ask me, although they have of course a fair bit of quality through their ranks.

Everton haven't impressed have they and they haven't got any strikers that delivers week in week out. A major minus for them. They'll grind out a fair amount of wins but things don't come easy for them.

Villa are solid enough but aren't world beaters and you could argue they haven't got a better team than we do.

... so, I'm not saying we are hot contenders for Europe (if 6th will take you there), but I'm saying it's not impossible and although we shouldn't expect it - why not aim and go for it? I think we've at least come far enough that you shouldn't laugh at anyone (me in this case ;)) pointing out the possibility at this point in time.

If the players never take their feet of the pedal and stay grounded working ever so hard in every game from now til the end of the season, we could be in with a shout, that's all I'm saying - and I'm getting a bit excited by the thought of it! :)

Likely to finish Top6? Not at all.
Nearly impossible to do so? Not at all.

Thoughts? (about our chances finishing 6th, or 7th...)

I think if the cfc game happened before the nufc game, we'd be talking about being relegation candidates rather than European contenders. Not necessarily by the OP, but in general.

we have a chance but i would like safc to get to 39 points and then see how many games are left, before europe is achieved.

this monday could be a vital game, as to how things may pan out

i have lost count of the times, when safc look like they may be on the verge of something, only for it all to come crashing down.

beat everton and we will have a chance to be safe in the league by the end of january, so after that, a run for europe may be on.

looking at our last six fixtures, they are all winnable games and if we have any chance going into them, we could finish top 7

home games in last 6 matches

west brom
wigan
fulham
wolves

away
birmingham
west ham

now there is a possibility of 18 points there, if we were on a roll by then

Or we could aim for Top Spot, see where we end up, if thats 6th-7th then so be it! The league may never be this open again!

Most of them will be involved in the relegation battle and be very hard opponents

i agree but they are winnable and when safc get on a roll, we can win these games.

especially the homes, if bent, gyan are fit then. they will have to play open games, if they need points and i always fancy safc to win, if the game is open at the sol

If they need the points I doubt it will be an open game; they'll try to nick it 1-0.

Elmo says we our eventual aim is to finish in the top 4, as he is only on a season long loan at the moment I am going to assume he means this season we are aiming to meet 'Arry's prediction and finish in the Champions League places.

Of course we should go for it like every other team and try and get maximum points from the remaining games and its possible but expectation is something else and it can turn sour so I'll be happy to finish top half this season and maybe next year with the addition of a few quality additions it might be a more realistic expectation.

Its an interesting theory like.

The last 25 league games have resulted in 9 wins, 10 draws & 6 defeats, giving us 34 points. Extrapolate this over 38 games would give us 56 points.

56 points would get us in to europe in 4 out of the last 7 seasons

That's a bonny word mind.
