Oops - I reeled off the team above from memory but clearly the memory is fading after more than half a century 😳
I just checked on the stats site and it was in fact:

Montgomery
Nelson
Ashurst
Anderson
Hurley
NcNab
Davison
Herd
Sharkey
Crossan
Mulhall

No Irwin or Usher. I can't recall Nelson or Davison at all.

Colin Nelson was an amateur who was a pharmacist in Boldon. Jimmy Davison was a fast lad on the wing. It was a good job the stands were there because he would have ran straight out of the Roker End.

2-2 against Luton Town at home 30th October 1971

Right behind the goal when Billy Hughes missed a penaly. The ball struck the inside of the post. A magnificent diving save from a Luton defender preceeded the penalty award and in those days that was not even a booking nevet mind a sending off.

That was the game that persuaded the Forest manager to pay 100 grand for Baxter the following month. That game was reckoned to Baxter's finest performance in a sunderland shirt since his home debut against shef utd
