Just Googled him. From his Wiki page:

Lawrence was also well known for his multi-coloured hair ofter drawing comparisons to the famous basketball player Dennis Rodman.

And he'd done time for armed robbery.

Also from Wiki:

Lawrence was, as a youth, involved in crime and in 1990 received a four-year prison sentence for a bank robbery. While playing for his prison side he was spotted by Cowes Sports, and then while playing for them spotted by Sunderland manager Terry Butcher.

Didn't even know prisons had football teams.

Is there a Prison League, too ?

I think I was about 5 years old, got the bus from Peterlee to Park Lane, then walked to Roker Park, remember the walk back as well, very tiring for little legs.

Cant remember who we played but I do remember I would have my best clothes on for a game.

I would get a bag of peanuts (tanner a bag ), half a pie and a drink of pop

There are football teams in prison who play in leagues.

All of their games are home games.

There's a book called Manslaughter United its worth a read.

How fascinating. That could be one of my Summer reads that, cheers.

I wonder which prison team is best placed league wise. Have we ever played one ?

My first game was against Derby in about 93. Think we got beat (theres a suprise!) as the crowd seemed misserable, and I think Marco was getting pelters from the crowd while playing for Derby. The game that got me hooked though was another loss this time in the cup when we got beat off Spurs 1-4 and Gary Bennett pulled off a Schmeichel-esque save! Was sat on the crash barrier and some pie eater rushed forward from behind and sent me flying face first onto the steps!!
