From what I can gather, he was expected to be available, at a push, for the third test with initial side strain. Archer will no doubt play the remaining tests if, as expected Jimmy is going to miss out. Broad may get a rest for the third or fourth test, circumstances allowing of course with Stone or Curran coming in.

Indeed. I more meant no time to switch off between fielding and then batting, which is fairly important. Very tough ask if, especially if its been a long day.
Anyway, as our best batsman Root shouldn't be opening anyway IMO.
