FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

I think its outrageous to say 'no more chances' considering this is his literally his first proper test match

I agree no more chances opening the batting as he isn't an opener and it was a crazy decision to pick him as one. It was sheer desperation considering how the similar selections of Hales and Ali worked out.

Trev's obsession with Warner/Sehwag/Trescothick style openers is getting tiresome. We have some great hitters of the old ball in the middle order. We just need old fashioned blockers to take the shine off the ball for them.

id even try an out of form moeen, he didnt do a bad job as opener

might sharpen his mind

malan?
I like Malan but think he would stuggle just as much with the moving ball as Roy would. For what its worth I agree Roy shouldnt be opening but think its very harsh to be on to drop him after a single innings.

Agree he shouldnt be opening but that comment was made in reference to test cricket in general not opening.

Which would be OK if we had any that were good enough. Sibley is who you are describing but his 3 months of form after looking nowhere near good enough until then doesn't qualify him for an Ashes series IMO. Jennings could be an 'old fashioned blocker' that went well. Its no good slagging off selections opening the batting we have tried many options and given players plenty of games. If we havent got the players we havent got the players.

I'd give Denley a go opening, I did suggest this a couple of days ago on this forum actually. I'm still not convinced by Burns though, perhaps Denley and AN Other with Root at 3, Roy at 4, Buttler 5, Stokes 6, Bairstow 7. The only problem with that is who is the AN Other?
