Whorlton Lido springs to mind.

used to be our regular sunday haunt when we were bairns

the whole family, aunts & uncles, cousins, nephews & nieces all their for the day - going down the rapids in the giant inner-tubes me da nicked from work and jumping into the plunge pool.

Wasn't till last year I found out that it had shut down (and that it was called Worlton - as a bairn I presumed it was Walton Lido and it was connected to the telly programme ).

A good place to chill, however, prone the odd time to charva infestation.

I dont think it was that, I just think someone rich bought it and closed it to members of the public. Saying that I very nearly drowned there as a kid but I suppose it was my own fault for jumping in like a lemming while I couldn't swim

The farmer who owned the land decided to stop letting people on it, nothing at all to do with health and safety.

But he was charging for car parking and the train ride and the council decided it was an attraction and therefore had to comply with certain conditions such as life guards and he decided it wasn't worth it.

My grandad used to take us there when I was a little lad, he lived at Nettlesworth, did he have a car! no!!!! we used to walk it.:)
Then when we were teenagers used to go camping there, had my 1st glimpse of M* Mc* titties when she used our tent to get changed into her cossie.:)
We used to come out of the water with one or two leeches stuck to us! had to burn them off.:)

There was always a bigger kid who had a tab, offered to burn them off for
10p then stuck the tab your leg for good measure

Drive past there all the time and always remember my sister being swept over the mini waterfall part with a look of terror on her face. It was one of the funniest moments of my childhood.

Finchale is cracking, the priory is now free to get in too. Just live along the road so used to walk down there in the summer and also on Christmas Eve when we were kids

that is what nearly killed me, it was very f***ing deep, I will have only been about 7 or 8 and couldn't swim at all, luckily somebody dived in and saved me, I guess in a way thats why they would need to have lifeguards etc although it was still my own daft bloody fault.

It's nice until the wind changes direction and you get the stench from the enormous landfill blowing into your face. Makes Houghton cut smell like Kouros.
