Well shit.

You know those things like song lyrics you misheard and thought you knew for years then see them written down and your life is never quite the same? I, as a kid, must have heard this as "another twist in the tail" and always imagined like a reference to a scorpion type thing with a barb right at the very end.

It's only now many many (many) decades later I've just realised while reading the internet on the shitter.
