I believe it went from hard to f***ing solid.
Got pretty far with it back when I was lucky to get 2 games a year because my mam was evil. Tried it on steam a few years back and barely got through 4 missions, there's probably a patch but I've never looked.

So I've just read about it and apparently there was a bug in the original xcom that changed the difficulty to easy regardless of what you picked so terror from the deep just feels difficult in comparison because they fixed that.
Don't think I've survived much past a few missions, the aliens are just rock.
