Ferdinand

For the first goal, who should turner have been marking? I thought there was someone at the back post who Ferdinand was picking up?

I thought it was a great run between te centre halves by Cahill with a perfect cross.

Lack of concentration by Ferdinand had left too big a gap between the centre halves in the middle of the pitch. The ball had been on the right hand side for a considerable passage of play yet Ferdinand was still over on the left hand side of the pitch and left himself too much ground to make up to challenge Cahill.
If the ball is over on the right then the right back and two central defenders should be covering the right hand and central channels. Ferdinand was not doing that effectively when the ball was crossed.

the through ball for the beckford chance was very reminiscent of the goal germany scored against england where the ball travelled a long way and the centre half tried to cut it out and missed it.

for my money the defence looked unsettled all night (including gordon), this may be due to ferdinands inclusion but more likely bramble/mensah's exclusion.

for what it's worth, i think ferdinand's level is below where we are now and he is a player who showed potential but for one reason or another has not fulfilled it.

when i saw the two starting elevens i thought there was a good chance we would struggle, everton's back 4 is fairly strong and they have a few potential match winners.

f***ing hell talk about over analysing a situation and where was turner at this point? Is he a mute now and can't communicate with Ferdinand. To blame ferdinand solely for the first goal is f***ing stupid. Not once have you mentioned turner in all that analysis.

Turner where where he should have been, acting as cover for the full back if the Everton lad decided to run at him and also covering the front post zone. He had every right to expect Ferdinand to be within fifteen or twenty yards behind him and able to cover any run from Cahill.
Ferdinand was caught out of position and we suffered for it.

Some people have blind spots where Ferdinand is concerned. Like others before him (Bardsley, Gordon, etc, etc) he comes in for far, far too much stick on here.

Last night there was a 20 minute spell in the second half where we were under the cosh and he was absolutely magnificent, everything they sent our way he repelled.

As he matures he will be capable of producing that form more regularly and for prolonged periods, just like his brother. Gordon is showing the same maturity and the signs are there that he will fill the potential to be one of the world's best keepers we know he has.

AF is a level below Bramble and Mensah as it stands, but he is on a par with Onouha and Turner. We have good strength in depth at the back at the moment and Anton is an important part of that.

What about the guy at the back post? Who should have been marking him then instead of Ferdinand?

agree with that thankfully he was on hand to block a shot after turner got turned in the box.

I honestly believe people are using their prejudices against Ferdinand and trying to blame him and making others who were equally at fault innocent

I actually thought he looked better the longer the game went on, for someone who's not played alot of football this season and has been injured himself I dont think he did too much wrong.

I think this is right and it typifies Anton. He often gets off to a shaky start.

First goal was Turners fault. Anton was marking back post and there was a player lurking out there which he had to keep an eye on.

Turner let the striker get too far away from him and miss judged his header when the ball came over so he got nowhere near it. Wasn't Antons fault at all.

It was Zenden's mistake leading to an unchallenged cross that caused the goal imo.

In fairness to Zenden he was beaten in the air which is hardly surprising given his lack of height, I think the problem came in that both he and Onuoha were slow in reacting to the second ball and in no time Baines had all the space in the world to deliver an excellent cross.

Aye I agree. It happens frequently with a lot of our players.

I honestly thought Anton had a very decent game last night, not perfect or anything but he looks to me like he's developing well.

Also, sometimes you have to give credit where it's due, Everton are a very good side, who when they get into gear are more than capable of playing excellent football and mixing it with the best. The first goal was a very good goal, the second was disappointing but overall it's a decent point.

he could do with having an invisible pixie sitting on his shoulder that shouts 'f***ing wake up' into his lug every 30 seconds, bit like those dead man swiches on trains that stop the drivers nodding off

Frustrating thing is that he screws up some very simple things like a two yard pass one moment and then will ping a 50 yard cross field pass the next. He looks outstanding and dire in the same match, consistency is his main problem although I don't know if it is a bit unfair what with the series of injuries and niggles he's had lately. Desperate for him to prove himself in a series of games.

The left back is there to do that job and Bardsley was in fact in position. The only one not in their correct position was Ferdinand. If the balls on the right the two most important areas to defend are the RH and central channels, Ferdinand should not have been left standing on the LH side.

In that particular move he allowed himself to be dragged back covering the runner rather than holding the defensive line and letting the player go offside. Yes he got the block in but shouldn't have needed to and gave away a needless corner.
Despite my posts I like Ferdinand and think he's had some good games for us, especially when filling in at left back but yesterday he had a mare.

I've just watched the goal again, and I can't agree with ya about the first goal. Turner is just as at fault, if not more. Turner was originally marking Cahill on the edge of the box when Baines received the ball.

I would suggest watching the goal again before laying the full blame onto Ferdinand.

Yakubu, turned Turner for the chance I am talking about. I only saw the incident once, but not sure how Yakubu would have been played onside because of Ferdinand

I was meaning the way he let the overlap happen.

He covered it once, then ran to the ball, leaving the door wide open. Happened all night.

As he matures? He's 26 in 3 months for christs sake. At the same age his brother was one of the best defenders in the world
