False 9?

I really hate playing senior players out of position rather than giving young players a run in the side. I always have. It's one of my least favourite things about modern footballs switch to disposable coaches and long term directors where a team manager knows there's no benefit in spending a year improving a player.

So the recent call for Sunderland to play a false 9 in the media rather than persist with any of the 4 strikers we've signed has really got on my nerves. As a result I was really not happy with Mike Dodds starting lineup on Saturday.

However after actually watching the game, as everyone now knows, Jobe did not play as a false 9. Jobe played as a centre forward. He played really well as a centre forward (though tired towards the end which is understandable). I assume he will play the same position tonight.

How long does he have to play there before we start counting any goals he scores as centre forward goals?

Footballers can usually play effectively in more than 1 position. Trai Hume is nominally a RB. He's played RB, RWB, CB, LB and for spells in games as DM as well.

Kieran Richardson when he was here played CM, LW, AM, second striker, RW, LWB and LB. He'd never played LB in his career until about 2 or 3 years into his time here, and it was arguably his best position in the end. That came about playing people 'out of position'.

Jobe looked great in the role at the weekend but seemed to me that he was left on far too long. No idea how far he ran but it Is not a 90 minute role particularly for an 18 year old. He’ll be hard pushed to repeat his performance tonight. Obviously I hope he does and I’m proved wrong as it was an effective formation and tonight may well be a similar game.

I don't think we have much choice at present. If we select any of our 'strikers' we are effectively playing with 10 men. Rusyn runs around a bit which probably makes him the best of a bad bunch, but we need more than that.

I'd probably stick with Bellingham as a forward for the time being.

Only Burstow has had any run of game time.

I'd also stick with jobe after saturday

Him playing cb for so long (rather than playing Anderson or johnson) was a detriment to the start of this season.

I have no idea who Richardson kept out the team as its too long ago tbh

Don’t give a shite if we play well and win tbh

Same set up as when we hammered Southampton, and Jobe played great, it’s not new news. The players are happier with it and Jobe is intelligent enough to play it.

Tired in the end ? Aye end of the first half, hes not good for 60 mins up there , let alone 90. Plus his arial threat is poor . Not knocking the kid but hes not the answer at this minute, in future , maybe , with work

I’d start Jones there and bring Hemir on when he tires. Thought he looked decent last night and would have done better with better players around him.
Tim hat firmly attached!

Lots of them can. Strange the way so many don't seem to grasp it, despite the fact that our most famous player in 25 years, who notched 113 times for us, being a RB at one time.

Rico had pace to burn which helped him enormously while he learnt the LB role. When he messed up, or was caught a bit out position, he had the speed to recover. I liked him best when he was behind Steed, with his tendency to cut inside creating space for Rico on the overlap. We still had people claiming he was 'out of position' after years in the role.

Atm he's the answer to the question 'which fit Sunderland player can most likely score goals from the cf position'

Annoying but possibly true

Hemir, not ready
Burstow, not good enough
Rusyn, more of a winger
Mayende, jury is still out

Only my opinion of course

Jobe looks the best option, and scored a typical poachers goal on Saturday, only for the blind officials to rule it out

Jobe is the best option to start, as things stand imho. Thought Dodds got it spot on tbh

So who is the answer "at this minute " ?

I’d actually start Rusyn. Having seen Leeds a couple of times think he’s the kind of striker who causes them problems.

I’d be even tempted to have Roberts and Pritch on the bench to bring on second half because think it’ll be important in this game with them having such a strong bench.

I also reckon Mayenda is close to ready for a start and Aouchiche actually did well vs Westbrom so I’d start him.

Toss up between Ekwah and Jobe for a slot alongside Neil.
