Failure to sign striker cost us

As if this topic needed another thread. Would the new striker cover for all the defensive injuries as well?

Last night we were let down by a lack of defenders, not strikers.

Did I miss us scoring?
So what you're saying is that the owners should spend THEIR money, to sign some random striker that's way down their list of potential signings, to satisfy the likes of you with your amateur ideas on football management? No thanks, I'd rather trust them.
Its cost us promotion. I will tell you what is amaterish.
Having no striker for more than half a season.
It's devastating that we didn't sign a has been like Wickham. It's also devastating that I had to watch some of the most beautiful goals I have ever seen a Sunderland side score making up for a lack of striker. It's also devastating that despite we were one of the most consistent scoring sides in the decision. Yeah, not buying a striker cost us...
Did we look like scoring last night
Yeah imagine wanting to sign a proven goal scorer -it will never catch on

I’ve been hugely critical of the Jan transfer window but it’s time to move on.

The recruitment team now must land at least one striker on a permanent basis before the season starts. A second striker, can then follow before the window closes.

If however we start the season with just Stewart (if he is fit and stays of course), people will rightly start to question what is going on.

We’ve had a very good season, but the pressure was off. It won’t be next season as expectations have been raised

Think it's funny because if we have Batth and Ballard playing those two play off matches we go through.

Tbf, had we kept Wright I suspect we’d be heading for Wembley.

I know hindsight is great, but it was ridiculous to let the lad go for the sake of a pathetic loan fee and to ship a chunk of his wages off the books. Sadly that’s the model though

I suspect you might know more than me about the Wright t deal. I thought wright's game time was going serverly limited. We did have Batth, Ballard Alese and Cirkin as potential CB options

Well done to our players and Tony Mowbray for working miracles with the players at his disposal.
Lot of nonsense posted about tactics or players bottling it.
The cold facts are we were unable to counter their high press because we had no option to play long.
The reason for this is the abject failure to sign a decent physical striker in January.
Those responsible have let down the players who have performed amazing the manager and the supporters.
You need the tools to do the job.
We failed not once but twice, unbelievable when you think of it, as Mowbrays remit was to keep us n this division. The boy chairman was happy. He might get his mam to release some cash next season for players instead of buying more shares. You’d think an average attendance of 39.338 would spark a wealthy investor to buy him out .

His game time was definitely going to be limited mate, but he was a good leader to have around the club. Last night would have been the perfect game for him as well as he wouldn’t have to worry about pace.

At the end of the day though, he was over 30. Under the model, the loan fee which was probably very small, was deemed acceptable and he was allowed to go

I thought he asked if he could go?

You're probably right but I can well imagine Wright wanting to play week in week out.. Deal suited both parties I reckon and Wright may have well angled for it to get minutes

Even if he did mate (which I don’t think he did), the club could have said no. I suspect though, under the model it made sense.

Let’s say he was on £6k a week and Rotherham agreed to pick up half. That then allowed us to bring in Anderson on say £2k a week, and make a saving of £1k a week to the budget.

Tbf Anderson has looked ok so far, so it may prove a good signing. I suppose the question is, did we really need to make a saving on Wright?

They could have said no, but he was behind Batth, Ballard, O'Nien, Anderson, cirkin and alise for a spot at CEntre Back.

Their simply has to be a balance in the squad , you can't have players who want to play regularly, being 7th choice, with no cup games left to play

Unless you want them to be able to see into the future

Sounds like moaning just for the sake of it

Of course we would have fared better with Wright last night, but could anyone seriously say in January they thought we might get to the play off semi second leg and desperately need him ?

Wright was injured just before Batth wasn't he?

This is new 😂

Here we go again

They tried to sign loads. None came off

They can't just magic the right player out of thin air

Better to sign no one than to sign the wrong player
.and as it transpired , scoring goals wasn't a problem

Exactly
So what if we sell Patterson in the summer. Would it be better to sign nobody if we can't find a goalkeeper that fits the "model" ???
There has to be some flexibility!

Scoring goals wasn't a problem but we may have scored more with a striker. We'd have conceded fewer goals if we'd had an outball. Look at last night, they knew they could push up without fear of anything running in behind. Same at start of first leg.

We did better than anyone expected. We actually performed better without a striker. It's been a strange season and there's no one reason why we have done so well and no one reason that we haven't gone up. If Ballard and Batth were fit we would probably be going to Wembley. In the end it was injuries to defenders that cost us.
This….Everton also screwed us recalling Simms hope they go down and may I also add poor referees thought the season let to many fouls on our players which resulted injuries ……

No that was why we conceded goals. But when our defenders had the ball they pressed us high up the pitch , kept pinching the ball because we had to play through them because we had no option of going long.

We could not even cross the ball because there were was no presence in the middle and only 2 big centre halfs is not enough as well.
Correct

This was the game where it showed how glaring not having Stewart hurt us and it was always going to happen on that postage stamp of a pitch.
