Facts about Sunderland



The Wearmouth Colliery shaft, opened in 1835, was the deepest mineshaft in the world, reaching a depth of 1700ft.

When the Titanic sunk one survivor was a Sunderland man originally from Southwick – working in the engine room of the doomed liner.

When US President Abraham Lincoln was assasinated in 1865 he was watching a play by Sunderland born Tom Taylor – the play was titled “Our American Cousin”.

In 1923, Sunderland Chief Constable F. J. Crawley pioneered phone boxes.
It was actually the "Police Box" like the one in Dr Who . It provided a telephone link to the police station, contained police equipment and was I think a resting place for coppers on the beat. The public could call the police in emergencies by using a phone that was accessible from the outside of the box but the rest of it was for police use only.
The first public telephone kiosk appeared in 1920 and was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The famous red phone box was designed a little later in 1924
