I've been hearing on the news about Facial Recognition Cameras being put in places like Kings Cross and a few shopping centres etc.
Images are then being stored on a massive database obviously and it can (in theory) help track movements of actual or potential criminals. It also obviously scans millions of faces of joe public who aren't criminals but takes a record of them too. Now considering the majority of these people will have licences of some sort, their pictures are stored on other databases etc. I suspect many will have social media accounts too so, it's not like your data isn't being splattered everywhere by you, let alone cameras picking up your movements too.
Big Brother Watch is an organisation set up to protect civil liberties etc and you can read more about them if you wish.
I see what BBW are saying about basically "Big Brother" knowing where you are at all times - like many people don't publicly announce it already - but my point is this.
If you have nothing to hide you surely have nothing to fear. How many times have we heard THAT particular line trotted out. Yes before anyone suggests otherwise, I believe people are innocent until proven otherwise, but if you're not a scummy shithouse who might stab someone then why should you be fussed if a camera picks you up in Kings Cross or The Trafford Centre or whatever. You're not a threat.
However, if it were possible for these cameras to actually help track down, narrow down searches and catch people who have committed crimes, can someone give me an argument as to why we shouldn't have them?
If facial recognition cameras had been up in Eldon Square yesterday and these scratters were known to the police already (one would assume they already have their photo) would facial recognition cameras have been beneficial?
I don't think what happened could have been prevented, but it makes you wonder.
