Facial Recognition / Big Brother Watch

I've been hearing on the news about Facial Recognition Cameras being put in places like Kings Cross and a few shopping centres etc.
Images are then being stored on a massive database obviously and it can (in theory) help track movements of actual or potential criminals. It also obviously scans millions of faces of joe public who aren't criminals but takes a record of them too. Now considering the majority of these people will have licences of some sort, their pictures are stored on other databases etc. I suspect many will have social media accounts too so, it's not like your data isn't being splattered everywhere by you, let alone cameras picking up your movements too.

Big Brother Watch is an organisation set up to protect civil liberties etc and you can read more about them if you wish.
I see what BBW are saying about basically "Big Brother" knowing where you are at all times - like many people don't publicly announce it already - but my point is this.

If you have nothing to hide you surely have nothing to fear. How many times have we heard THAT particular line trotted out. Yes before anyone suggests otherwise, I believe people are innocent until proven otherwise, but if you're not a scummy shithouse who might stab someone then why should you be fussed if a camera picks you up in Kings Cross or The Trafford Centre or whatever. You're not a threat.
However, if it were possible for these cameras to actually help track down, narrow down searches and catch people who have committed crimes, can someone give me an argument as to why we shouldn't have them?

If facial recognition cameras had been up in Eldon Square yesterday and these scratters were known to the police already (one would assume they already have their photo) would facial recognition cameras have been beneficial?
I don't think what happened could have been prevented, but it makes you wonder.

Yep. That's the issue BBW are raising I suspect
There's a bit of a debate about how accurate it is too. Apparently it works quite well on white males. The accuracy rate drops for anyone else.

When the person in the photo is a white man, the software is right 99 percent of the time.

But the darker the skin, the more errors arise — up to nearly 35 percent for images of darker skinned women, according to a new study that breaks fresh ground by measuring how the technology works on people of different races and gender.

How much trust is being placed in technology that's not reliable?

I think you should be able ot opt out of things like that. Pretty sure there's been instances of people being cautioned or fined for public disorder offences just for covering their faces walking past these cameras. That's a bigger issue for me than their use.

Not turning this into a race issue but anyone with a burka, sunglasses and a hat, bike helmet etc would easily screw the system.

I dont think people will get the results they were expecting if they search for BBW

nah, I'll give it a miss

this is also exactly why the porn filter database is a catastrophically stupid idea - a 3rd party creating a giant high-value target for hackers

They caught them

Don't understand how it would have changed what happened

Aside from wearing sunglasses, hats etc. it is a race issue anyway because the software isn't as accurate at recognising anyone with dark skin. Racist software.

It wouldn't have changed what would have happened, but say those scrotes were known to police and they went in Eldon Square - potentially causing bother - known track record etc - maybe they could have been moved on or something,
I don't know. Like I said, it may be better to get people who have already caused problems.

I doubt that would work. Provocative. And plenty of scrotes, even terrorists and murderers have been known to police beforehand. In most cases they wouldn't act before something makes them. The police i mean. Add hoodies to the list of methods of hiding your face.

Not so long ago Facebook introduced face recognition. We did some races that a photographer had taken pics of the riders. If you put your curser on a face some would be named, others not. Don't know if they are still using that.

If the government could chip every child at birth they would do so.

To an extent they already know everything you do anyway, phone tracking, online activity etc but it’s just another step towards full 24/7 surveillance.

They’ve had this stuff in China for years btw
That's coming.

But police could be deployed to the area, making it less likely that people would kick off there.
