I wouldn’t say they were out thought as such, just by the nature of being the lead car without P3 in sight means you are naturally more vulnerable. Lewis was faster, so if they boxed max lewis would have won.

Thought Max got his pacing wrong, chasing Lewis’ times by lapping in the 1:19.5s instead of flatlining his pace to save some rubber for when Lewis arrived. This would have avoided the cliff edge effect he encountered and gave him at least a chance

Not sure it was a gamble, I think they knew they couldn't overtake cleanly on-track, and they had an easy free pitstop, so went for the option.

But yeah, starting 3rd and winning is much more impressive than starting on pole and finishing 2nd
