Explained - Why do Sunderland fans hate Coventry City and Jimmy Hill?

Agree. My dad detests them but they're just another team to me.

Remember being at Fulham away (won 1-3 iirc) and the gantry is on one side of the ground but you need to go past the away fans to get into the ground proper.

Chris Kamara came past closely followed by Jimmy Hill - the bloke received the most abuse I’ve ever heard and mostly from the older lads! I wasn’t even sure who it was until I could see his chin digging up the pitch.

No mention of last year’s fan antics to respark it all but not as bias as anticipated

This. It played the incident down a bit but not too much (might be wrong but was Hill not on the committee who investigated it and decided there was no wrongdoing? If true, that didn't get a mention).

Either way, and I know a lot of our fans don't agree, I don't hate Coventry for it. It was before my time supporting us and, ultimately, it was Jimmy Hill who did it, not Coventry. Don't get me wrong, for people who followed us at the time I can quite understand why they'd hold a grudge, I'm not saying anyone should just move on or whatever, but for me it was an action by a bloke (who has since died) so I'm not going to have a hatred for a club over it.

That being said, I was in the north stand last season and their fans were arseholes that day. Almost as bad is the total whitewash from their fans who, almost to a man, seem to suggest that we're all making it up. There was a lot of stuff chucked down, more than I've seen from any other club, the mags included and it was a disgrace. Had the Coventry fans criticised the mindless minority I'd have no real issue but instead a lot went on like dicks. A lot also seemed to be the same at the away game that season. So I can't say I've got a high opinion of them, and I hope we stuff them. Wouldn't class it as a rivalry though

Yeah I was there. Must admit I joined in with the abuse like 😂

The cheeky tw@ts were charging an extra quid for their programme because of whatever the special event he was there for.

i was there and it was 0-0 mate.Richardson free kick wrongly disallowed. He hit an even better one next game against the mags

A fierce rivalry 😂 oh do please fuck off they mean nowt to me

Same, but some of our fans assist in sustaining this supposed 'rivalry' by the way they gan on.

I heard some young lad in the toilets before the Bristol game proudly proclaiming how him and his marras were printing stickers of Jimmy Hill's head in a coffin ahead of Sunday, and he would be delighted if the police were to refuse him entry into the ground because of it. Odd behaviour

Fulham 1-3 Sunderland

Thought Hill was at this one? I was definitely there for one of them at least!

Aye it was this one - just read an article on RR about it. He waved at us and had to escorted away by police.

I think he was at both, the 1-3 game was the one where he was stood at the corner of the away end and police had to remove him as people were getting on the pitch. From where I was stood it looked like he was waving and didn’t realise he was getting abuse
