Exiles and Internal Exiles

does this mean that only illnesses/accidents that occur when you are visiting this country are treated by the nhs.....

if so it makes sense, as it wouldnt be much of an emergency if you had the time to book a flight and come home for the treatment..sounds about right to me...

what does really bug me though is i have aunts and uncles who emigrated to canada in their teens who are now around 75ish, they come home evry 3/4 yrs or so to pick up their state pension.... they have never paid anything in since the late 1940s early 1950s

Correct, unlike the immos legal or illegal who get treated no problems.
I ran out of tablets while on a visit a few years back, what a carry on to get a prescription, would only give me 3 tablets, enough till I got back here, cost about £15 all together.

As a Brit i thought you were entitled to NHS treatment, regardless.
I also thought you were entitled to visit a GP on an emergency visit as a visitor. Most GP´s would understand your situation and be empathetic. The GP would then refer you on for appropriate treatment.

I read you haven´t been well Kehtcuf. I hope you are on the mend now and enjoying chilling.

You can have an opinion. Some people will think it worthless. Seems fair enough.

Of course there will be differences of opinion, that i understand. I think some peoples opinions are worthless because they are rubbish not because of where they live.

But the very fact that you won't confirm that you live abroad suggests that you think your opinion is undermined by your exile.

Thanks Mat, have good days and bad days, went to see my surgeon today to arrange another scan, he was off sick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need to have the European Health Card if we want free emergency treatment back in the U.K.

people can think what they like.

If people leave the UK, then their opinion on what is happening in the U,k to some peopl,e will be meaningless. It's not a big deal.

My only beef would be that people moving abroad tend to have a low opinion of where they left behind. A bit of a generalisation, I know. Doesn't invalidate their opinion.

Eh ! I´m not sure how you work that one out.

What difference does it make to someones opinion where they live ? That was one of the questions posed by this thread.
The question was asked because a number of posters were saying that anyone who lived abroad opinions were not valid and irrelevant for issues in Britain.

On the contrary. I reckon most Brits abroad have a positive opinion of Britain.

i don't agree with this mind - i've been all over europe and britain has some of the nicest places I've seen. I've never met any ex-pats over here who run the place down, yes we have a gripe about things (prices mainly) but the place itself is rightly spoke very highly of

Agreed. If anything, my appreciation of the UK has grown since I've left. I'm always telling the Canadians how much better things are in England and it really annoys our lass.

Hmmm. Probably only just 'most'.

I'm on a couple of expat forums and there does tend to be a lot of sniping at the country. In many ways I think it's just their attempt at justifying their move abroad.

aye my missus has told me to 'fuck off back there then' a few times when I go on about the coast and stuff too much

I do find most Brits who have left tend to be more sentimental and romantic about the country than most who live there.
Undoubtedly there is some sniping but in my experience that is a minority and they usually have their personal reasons.

I think anyone still in the north-east should get off this thread.

I wa asked because the thread you posted on was about what it is like to live in this country with the problems of immigrants etc .everyone is entitled to an opinion on anything. No one can stop you voicing your opinion. My point (And i think others on that thread) was you wouldn't know how it was really like unless you were living amongst it yourself. You may have experience of living in another country with similar problems, but unless it's the same place the comment is about, then it,s not the same.IF you are talking about your experience of living in Spain, then i could have an opinion, but you would know more than me,due to you seeing it day in , day out for yourself.

It,s not a vendetta.More that people can relate others comments more if they have had the pretty much the same for themselves.I don't live in Sunderland anymore, so i would feel a bit of a twat trying to teach people the errror of their ways for the things they have to deal with,.It,s always best to talk about your own experiences, so when you refused (Your perogactive) then people will listen to others in the same boat more so.

I wa asked because the thread you posted on was about what it is like to live in this country ..... more so.
All sorts of people can have opinions, where they live doesn't make their opinion more or less valid. (ie I'd rather listen to an intelligent foreigner talk about England than an unintelligent native).
