Exiles and Internal Exiles

There seems to be a body of thought on the board who say Exiles who do not live in Britain should not have an opinion on any issues which are happening in Britain because they do not live there. Some accept that Exiles can have an opinion but that it is not valid and is irrelevant because it does not directly affect them.
Do people think that in order to have a relevant opinion about issues in Britain that people need to live there ?
Also, should posters who are internal Exiles within Britain and not living in the North East be able to comment on things in the North East such as local politics. If so are their views relevant ?

I live outside of the world of repetitive argumentation so can't comment, or can I?

If I can then I say yes and if I can't then why can't I and if I did anyway it's a yes from me.

No.

If the said exiles are no longer citizens of the UK and are citizens of another country then they can't have a say, otherwise yes they can.

:lol::lol:

You sound like Vicky Pollard.

So anyone who is living in another country and is a British citizen can have a valid say and opinion. Fair enough.

That's just daft, I am still a British Citizen, and always will be, so of course I'm going to have an opinion on affairs in the UK. If I'm not entitled to an opinion then nobody in the UK should have an opinion on anything outside their own shores.

It's a fallacy used by people to try and undermine people they don't agree with, ignoring the fact that:

a) Everyone can have an opinion about anything
b) They themselves have opinions about matters outside their own immediate experience
c) This is the Internet, the home of unqualified opinions, so when did it suddenly become a rule that saying something on an Internet message board required a side hearing to establish the credentials of the person venturing the opinion?

What shores? Bugger.

What he said.

Also, to the poitn about citizenship - Britain recognises dual citizenship so even if you take up foreign citizenship you are still and always will be a British citizen.

I have certain opinions about stuff back home but accept that as I'm not seeing news everyday it's always at some remove and I migh tnot have all the facts. I hear about things that might piss me off, such as the ridiculous Vaux debacle, and my immediate reaction is usually tempered after a while by the logic of 'well I don't live there any more and I'm never going back permanently so why should I lose any sleep over cretins in local government when I only see the place for a couple of weeks every few years'.

Still, it's MY town and I hate the bastards who are always bollixing things up!

Twenty years ago i think this was a valid point but since the advent of 24 hour TV news stations and the internet but now people have access almost instantaneously to "facts" almost regardless of where you are. If you chose to find out about an issue in Sunderland which you were interested in i think you could access local papers, local radio, and local TV as well as all the nationals therefore having the same information as someone living locally. Talking to people living there would also give a "local feel" to that information. If anything, someone who takes the time and trouble to research a particular issue they can have a more informed opinion than someone locally who does not bother.

Did you all know that despite paying my taxes/N.I for nearly 40 years I am only allowed emergency health cover when I go back for a visit.

does this mean that only illnesses/accidents that occur when you are visiting this country are treated by the nhs.....

if so it makes sense, as it wouldnt be much of an emergency if you had the time to book a flight and come home for the treatment..sounds about right to me...

what does really bug me though is i have aunts and uncles who emigrated to canada in their teens who are now around 75ish, they come home evry 3/4 yrs or so to pick up their state pension.... they have never paid anything in since the late 1940s early 1950s
