I was driving home from work when a thought occurred to me. Last season we got a grand total of 2 points from the last four fixture that we have just played. 2-1 Spurs, 7-2 Chelsea, 0-0 Stoke and 1-1 Everton. Our goal difference suffered to the extent of -6. This season we managed 8 points and have improved our goal difference by 5. Even if we take our next game into the figures Wolves away we would still only have 2 points.

I think we are on the march. Exciting times ahead

Being a pedantic arsehole that I am, it was 2-0 at Spurs mate

You need to concentrate on the road mate!!!

More pedantic fuckerings - Shirley over those 4 games, the GD has improved to +5, not 'by 5', a difference of 12.

Spent the afternoon playing Fifa 09 on the PS3...... typically i was sunderland.....and god that team was shit. Too easy to forget how bad that team was, just 2 years ago.

Evidence enough.

True mate.

The PL teams coached by Roy and Ricky were BAD. Of course, part of the reason was Roy's aweful spending. What was it? 5 mil for Chopra, 2 mil for Halford, 8mil for Anton, and I forgot how much for McCartney. Bloody Awful. But they stayed up!

I wouldn't blame Keane for that. He struggled to attract the players he wanted and ended up paying over the odds for average players, but it was an inflated market at the time.

£8m for Ferdinand back then didn't seem nearly as ridiculous as it does now.

How many points/what position were we in after 14 games last season is the true measure of progress (if any)?

Yes, much evidence of progress this season. If you look at the equivalent 14 league results from last season (assuming West Brom / Newcastle to be Hull / Burnley), then the comparison is:

Season, PL, W, D, L, F, A, GD, PTS
Last, 14, 3, 4, 7, 12, 24, -12, 13
This, 14, 4, 8, 2, 17, 15, +2, 20

Can't really argue that progress has been made. If we carry on at the same rate of improvement for the rest of the season then we will finish with 68 points which last season was good enough for 5th.
