Everton midfield

David Moyes has built a bloody good side while not spending a massive amount of money. He has kept a group of players together for a number of seasons, and has a squad attuned to playing his style. He hasn't made wholesale squad changes each summer, and has wisely invested any income that came his way (e.g. Rooney, Lescott)

Forget the current league table. Once again, they should expect to be sniffing around the Europa Cup places.

They represent the role model of what we aspire to be.

If Elmohammady had been on from the start of the second half then Baines would not have been allowed the luxury to get forward to support the Everton midfield.
Distin covered most of the defensive duties himself, certainly from the centre to the left handside and did it comfortably from where I was sitting. If we are going to sit back and try to catch teams on the break we need pace on the flanks.
They played five in midfield for most of the second half because we didn't keep the ball and we didn't press them enough when they had the ball.
It was not just a case of the over-used expression 'Everton are well-organised'. We lost our shape for long periods and made it easier for them to pass their little six-yarders.

Fellaini, as good as he is, would have changed nothing. You already won the midfield battle without him, but you're strikers are shit. Including Yakubu.

We wouldn't have conceeded with Fellaini playing. Yakubu was playing very well and then got dropped for no reason at all for Saha. He's our best striker, even if he isn't scoring, his hold up play is excellent.

In what way would your centrally defensive midfielder have prevented Zenden skinning your fullback and cutting the ball back to our striker who was being marked by your defender?

You wouldn't have had the ball to start with. When Felli plays we keep the ball a lot more, something we were lacking massively when you scored the first.

You already had plenty of the ball. Had he been a defender, I could have accepted it, but he would have changed very little in that game as you already came out top in the middle of the park.

The problem was that your strikers were shit.

You reckon Fellaini was a bigger loss to you than our 5 in 4 striker?

After we scored the first we couldn't get hold of the ball.

Fellaini runs our midfield, Gyan is a good player but Jags and Distin have dealt with better this season.

Fellaini would have given us a proper defensive shield instead of Heitinga who is completely lost in midfield. That in turn would have allowed Arteta to play more of his normal game rather than the what he's been doing recently.

Basically Fellaini's presence has a huge knock on effect and thats a problem for us as we shouldn't be so reliant on one player.

Arteta not playing his normal game, is not down to his role, it is down to him struggling for form.

Fellaini, excellent as he is, dominates in an area where you were already dominating, which is why both our goals came from out wide, rather than through the middle.

By the same token, we struggled to link our midfield with our forwards, which is exactly the role that gyan was playing against Chelsea. Instead we had an unfit Bent who was being outsprinted by Jagielka.

All ifs and buts really. You were without Fellaini and (through choice) Yakubu and Rodwell. We were missing Gyan, Bramble and Mensah and (through choice) Steed and Elmohamady.

Shame Newcastle outclassed them at Goodison.

 Did they fuck, they scraped a 1-0 despite us putting in our worst performance for about 2 years. We'll see what happens at St James Park.

Well they failed to deal with Danny Welbeck
