What if he flops this year? What if we get relegated? Remember the Phillips scenario
The mags just sold wjnaldum for 25 million and gonna sell sissoko for big money. Norwich sold Redmond for 10 million.

The games changed teams can afford to keep players and hold out for bigger fees.

Why would we sell our first choice CB unless it was for stupid money. 18 mil isn't stupid money and our squad is depleted as is.

I implied nothing of the sort. I was making the point that you can't justify the sale of Kone by suggesting that it's OK because Love, McNair, Rodwell et al can play there if needs be. You obviously think otherwise but I don't think it's that ridiculous to have 4 centre backs on the books like. McNair has said himself he is a midfielder BTW. And by your logic we shouldn't sign M'Vila as now we have Cattermole, Rodwell, Larsson, Kirchoff, McNair etc who can play midfield.

The crux of this, is that if/when Kone leaves, we are relying on Kaboul, Djilibodji and O'Shea at centre back. Kaboul is injury prone, Djilibodji is somewhat of an unknown, O'Shea is a good pro but will probably have to play far more this season that we would want him to, if we were looking to progress. Why take the risk?
McNair has played most of his career at CB. He will be cover in that position, as well as in others. We have 5 players (excluding Kone) who are very comfortable at CB, and beyond that, 1 or 2 who could play there in a real emergency. Djilobodji is no more of an unknown than Kone was, either.

The midfield situation is different, because Larsson probably won't be here and Rodwell isn't good enough there. We'll also be playing 3 CM players most likely, whereas only 2 CBs at any 1 time, and we've lost M'vila without replacing him (I'm not convinced McNair will play there) whereas we've already replaced Kone. You can't have a host of specialist cover in every position, which is why somebody like McNair is really useful, because he'll cover 3 or 4 positions without he need to be buying millions of players to sit on their arses all season.

Im at a complete loss why we would sell for £18 million, makes no sense to me on any level

If we are selling - squeeze the bastards for every last penny
Guaranteed If he was at Spurs , Levy would be demanding nowt less than 30m

Give me one other example of when a club has announced a player may be sold?
Simply for the fact that no comments by SAFC on this matter or denying the statement Koné regarding a new contract made would suggest there was an offer or promise. If SAFC had the desire to rubbish the rumours that Koné may be about to be sold I'm sure that would placate most supporters. By not doing so, SAFC have just fanned the rumour flames.

They run a sports news channel and run a betting website on which you can place bets on transfers. I don't think that should be allowed to be fair. They obviously start some of these transfer rumours off just to make themselves money.
Agree. A conflict of interests if ever their was one.
