To be honest, that's a really good point.

He will be worth about £10m more in January (always is an expensive window, more Premier League games under his belt etc.)

We keep bring told how savvy Bain is, plus Moyes hasn't really had time to target ideal replacement (i don't think it's Papy or McNair) ; to sell Kone now would be madness.
So how much would he have cost last summer just wondering

If that article is true that the daily star have just put up then tbh I don't blame Kone. He only wants a contract that matches kabouls. If you worked with a colleague at your workplace who was on double your wage, where you were doing a " better job " surely you would go to your employees wanting a rise
He isn't doing a better job than Kaboul which is where the logic falls down somewhat.

But the objective is to play football at the highest possible level. That is done by fielding a squad of players good enough for the task. If we had a good squad with a ready replacement either already here or lined up to come in,then the time may be right to cash in and take some profit. But,we haven't. We're not in that position owing to many years of player mismanagement. Our squad is f***ing terrible and not fit for purpose. In order for us to achieve our objective....at the moment,to stay in this league....we have to keep our better players. There is no point in us cashing in and taking a ,say £10m profit on Kone ,and struggling again at the bottom. Papy is a squad addition,as is McNair. We've no evidence either of them will improve what Kone gave us.
Unless the club think they do have a replacement in papy. If and it's a big if he slots straight in then it makes any potential Kone deal look a decent one.

Given the carry on when he first signed it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if he had requested something down the line based on is staying up or whatever. Either way the club are making the wrong decision on flogging him imo

The kone signing at £5m was a one in a hundred signing for Sunderland. You just know we will completely waste the money. A third of it is potentially being spent on two average youth players from man utd

This is where we need to trust our highly rated manager. Otherwise we could have re-hired Steve Bruce to moan at.

I agree. I like Kone and he had some fantastic games last season and likely we would have went down without him but he had a couple of stinkers in that run including against Chelsea where we looked far more comfortable when O'Shea came on. Everyone is going on like he is the best centre half in the world. He isn't which is why at 27 he was still playing for a poor French team and only signed for us.

Still want him to stay though.

I couldn't disagree more. Kone may have only displayed good form in a 6 month period but during that 6 month period he looked like the best CB we had at the club since we came back up. Now considering our defence looked like four amateurs before his arrival, it is a ridiculous risk for the club to presume they can just go out and replace that player. We have suffered from some awful defending over the last couple of seasons and I cannot understand how any fan would want to possibly go back to watching that for £12 million pound profit.

Yes you can buy another decent player for that £12 million but it is not worth losing a defender who has really helped sort out the back four. Obviously Sam had a part to play in that too but Kone has been nothing short of excellent since he arrived and I think the club are very stupid to let him go.

And what happens when Papy gets injured or suspended?

I really dont know what you expect, all clubs sell players. Hopefully Moyes has a plan to make us more competetive even if |Kone does leave, after all, thats why he has been employed.

I dont consider myself a happy clapper, just a realist. If we turn down Everton, what would we do if Chelsea come calling?

Sell him to Chelsea

Don't sell him to bloody Everton

This. He was rotten against Chelsea. Looked very shaky.

It's all well and good talking about it being good business, but IMO it paints us as small time, a club that sells its better players on and never aspires to having a first XI to be proud of.

You can't just stay on this merry go round of selling your star players and bringing in replacements who might do a similar job. You end up treading water at best, relegated at worst.

There is no bright side to the likes of Kone leaving. Simple as that.
Yes, we move on, pointless crying about it etc. but it'd be a very bad indication to me that this is how the club will always be run.
