It's a team though.....sometimes the manager just gives the final nod. pearson got a lot of kudos for the brilliant signings Leicester made but it was actually Steve Walsh who did the legwork......and he's now at?

Unless you know the intricacies of a scouting network it's difficult to say which element(s) make it successful.

But your post implied that Everton have a good scouting network, was it built up since Koeman was there or would you admit that Moyes has laid down the infrastructure over his long tenure there?

My point is that if a manager has built a good network at Everton then we can be confident that eventually the scouting network at SAFC will improve.

There is a monumental amount of short termism on here at the moment.

I would say it is DEFINITELY not the managers place to promise a pay rise. What if the CEO refused?

And if it was as cast iron a promise as Kone seems to think, it would have already been in his contract.

It's a lie from Kone so the fans don't turn on him.

You highlight why we shouldn't be in outcry about this.

He isn't and wasn't as good as some are going on. Kaboul is a better defender.

Kone has played his entire career in mediocrity, one short seme decent spell for us and people going on like he is irreplaceable and Maldini reborn.

For all we know Djilibodi (sp) is better anyway
Yeah, you're right in a way. But sometimes players remain unearthed for whatever reason. Maybe he's one of them. All I know is that he slotted in last season effortlessly and forged what was probably our best CD pairing in a decade. I don't think we should break it up.

Hopefully Papy can do the same.

You can't keep a player who wants to go.

We already have a replacement and we will be able to put the extra cash towards a more badly needed striker.

Were you saying that when we signed kone to replace coates?

It's not how it works though.....look at my earlier post where i highlighted our attempts to replace Henderson......we never did despite
I read at the time that the rodwell fee had some serious add ons unlikely to be met but we'll assume you are right
Tbf larsson has been excellent value on a free.
Bbc have the liverpool fee of henderson at 20m
Fact remains there wasnt a person on here not happy with rodwell's signing. Easy to be critical after the event.
You were adamant mcgeady was tailor made for the premier league based on youtube. He's lucky to get on the bench
That we waste money is not in doubt.
we wasted bigger money when we had a football man upstairs in NQ.
We wasted money when we had DoF's.
The managers have by and large been popular appts but quickly have turn3d to shite.
Short has backed them.
Unfortunately for the club only bsa has done anything of note and left the club much much better than when he took over.

My post was merely to highlight the difficulty in replacing a key player. Unless you know exactly what you're doing you can waste more than you raise. Some on here seem to think that selling Kone for £20m means we can buy his replacement for £5m and three other key signings with the rest. As Bruce showed it's not that easy.

That's a fair view.

But I can't truck with the decision to sell based on £20 mill being a good price. We are a struggling team, probably battling relegation again with a weaker side and we are selling our best defender.

WTF are we doing? Trying to go down it appears. It isn't a good deal to get rid of your best defender in over a decade at the first opportunity. We are considerably weaker than last season and we start in 2 days time. Not good business by any measure and £20 mill doesn't alter that.
In fairness the English FA and the BSA situation didnt help. I think there is a lot going on behind the scenes in trying to get players in - we have a good manager and need to trust him. In terms of Kone I think its obvious his agent is trying to engineer a move - like I said I dont want him to go but I think his head is turned so now we have to get the best deal possible for the club but we need to use the money wisely.

20MIL for Kone is actually great business, 4x profit in 16 games, you like to think the club are confident enough that they can find an able (or better replacement) for less money leaving cash to spare for other signings.

They say hindsight is a beautiful thing but I have a feeling we might look back on this as a great deal.

Selling your best players seldom works in the long run.

It might not be feasible to prevent it and sometimes the rosy scenario you paint does pan out, but it is the exception. In the end and usually sooner rather than later, it works against the club that sells.

The top clubs are the top clubs because they have the money to buy all the top players or to keep those they have. It's a food chain and we are a long way from the top of it.

If theres a player in france of the same quality or better - and we pay £8m for him............... not bad business.
There are better defenders for less than £20m they just need scouting. Everton are being a bit lazy really.
Or worse, nobody knows, after Altidore I trust nothing until I have seen it for myself.

20 mill is a drop in the ocean compared to the money the club will lose if/when relegated.. Selling your best players when the squad is already weaker than last years in a season where other teams are strengthening is asking for relegation!

It isn't a good deal to sell the best defender we've had in over a decade when you are a struggling relegation team.

The size of the fee doesn't alter that. You are being blinded by the number, when what is important is the strength of the team.

Im not being blinded by anything, Moyes has a managerial choice to make, that's why he was employed. All clubs sell players in order to further strengthen, why should we be any different?

I wont be throwing my toys out of the pram that's for sure.

Yes, I don't WANT him to leave, but if he is a disruptive influence and we get good money, see ya Lamine! He'll be a forgotten man in 3 years.

Arguably our best player, the club needs to do everything to keep him. A class above most of team and unlike Kaboul will play most of the games
