Diji, Kaboul, McNair and O'shea will cover the centre half positions. kirchoff can also step in if needed.

We won't be signing another one.

We'll be making a mistake then. McNair isn't here yet, JoS is not good enough anymore and Jan isn't fit. There's always Rodwell, though.

20MIL for Kone is actually great business, 4x profit in 16 games, you like to think the club are confident enough that they can find an able (or better replacement) for less money leaving cash to spare for other signings.

They say hindsight is a beautiful thing but I have a feeling we might look back on this as a great deal.

What about the 20% - 25% sell on clause rumoured to be in there that his old club would get. If that is the case, once you pay that plus any bonus / payment due to Kone then it isn't looking as good is it?

Just said this on different thread.
We haven't seen anything to say he warrants a huge fee. Stones went for big money as he's English, always been the case.
He's a decent player - solid but nowt flash.
£20m is a good deal for us.

This all day long. I think we've had so much crap that people are fretting at the prospect of losing a one that is decent. Kone isnt a world class defender. He is v good at best. As long as we reinvest and replace him (maybe that bodji dude) then there is no problem with selling for 20mill. Im actually in favour of flogging him for that much.

But if the offer of a contract was claused with 'if we stay up son, we'll bump your wages up' and it hasn't happened, then that's a bit crap.
The more it drags on, the less time we have to get someone else in.
If that was the case mate then yes the club would be at fault. However, the lad does well and all of a sudden his £40 or £50k a week wages arent good enough. If we cave in to him the rest of the lads who did well at the back end of the season will also be knocking on Moyes's door.

I dont want to loose him but at the same time he should not hold the club to ransom. Every club in the world apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid are selling clubs - its what we do with the money.

No it isn't.

He's the best defender we've had in over a decade and we will not be able to replace him with one as good. It doesn't matter how much you get for him if you are significantly weaker and battling relegation it isn't a good deal.

People get hung up about money. It's actually irrelevant if you can't/don't replace players with equal quality. Look at us in the last 6 years...signed a load of dross and we've been lucky to survive. And here we are selling our best defender in a long time at the first opportunity.

It's not in any way a good thing.

This! We can't improve if we sell our best players. Also,it's the effect on the rest of the squad, they see the best players leaving. Kaboul was a different player when he had Kone alongside him.

you think we promised him a new deal after 15 games man

I'm not disagreeing with the agents bit, you have to work with them, its why BSA was so good, he knows the system inside out

Its one reason why its a big loss

But I just feel that maybe these 2 are taking the piss a bit too much. I'd be surprised if he stayed like.
Agreed. I think it's gone like this, allardyce went , less chance of kone staying, agent knows everton need a defender and will pay x amount per week for kone, agent ask safc to match otherwise they're off, moyes/safc don't budge and get in replacements, goodbye kone

We've spent a good few seasons trying to buy a good centre half, but ended up with absolute dross.
So we sign someone who really looks the part then sell him for a profit after a handful of games, back to square one .

I agree with this...but it doesn't change our situation of selling our best defender for years and making us weaker.

Seems to me that he and his agent are engineering the move, I wont comment on the alleged fee until the deal is done. Anywhere around the £20 million mark has to be a good deal for the club surely, 4 x profit in eight months. Take the money and spend it elsewhere where we need it.

As I've already said it would have been put in front of him as an incentive to sign for a club that looked on its way out of the Premier League, same as relegation clauses would have been put in, we weren't the only club interested in him.

Money is relevant when we have the debt we have. If we give this lad a bumber pay rise who next will be wanting more money. I dont want to sell but having watched the kids video yesterday and his focus on more money combined with a possible £21m offer I think we need to seriously consider it. Either that or Kone gets his head down and focuses on the football instead of ££££.
