Hey - why not? In recent years Fulham and Everton have played in Europe, so let's stop being hesitant as supporters and start dreaming about it, as Anton has started to suggest.

And that's not being a 'deluded Mag' type of supporter - we've got a good squad, getting results against top teams and everything is in place club-wise.

One year in Europe in my lifetime - for a club this size - is simply not good enough.

What's French, German and Italian for 'Ha'way' ?

What i've seen so far this season we are more than capable of getting to Europe.

If we do is another matter.

not taking the mick here but, how many do you think would attend a game with the kazakhstan cup winners on a thursday night, in a qualifier in the last week of july?

then if we qualified for the group stages, would we have a squad to cope?

we have struggled for donkeys years with injuries and leaving players out of cup matches, when we only have on average about 4 cup games a season

Players will need targets to aim for. I'm guessing at the moment this is what they'll be being told by Bruce & Black since 'top 10' is being achieved currently.

...and Bolton and West Ham and Millwall and Middlesbrough.

Top ten mate, let's evolve the way we're going, couple of signings, let Catts, Hendo, Meyler, Gyan etc settle in and develop and target Europe next year.

Yeah, why not?

Bolton are being bigged up, by the media, as European contenders and people seem to be going along with it ........... this is after winning 5 games out of 14 despite having played Wolves, Wigan, West Ham away, taking 1 point off Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool, 2 of which were at home, and not having played Chelsea.

Not only that but they've had Newcastle, Stoke, Birmingham and Fulham at home so it's hardly been a difficult start compared to ours.

Everton and fulham got there through merit as did bolton. The other three weren't going to compete in europe were they
boro won the league cup and then got to the uefa final, for all the good it did eventually

completey forgot , and winning the carling cup is nowt compared to finishing in the top seven place in the league imo. Anyone can win the cup, it takes a good team to get in through the league system which is a lot more difficult.

What do you mean by that? A club of our stature should be playing in europe every year.

Not really true is it. We have not won for a hell of a long time.

Stuff 7th in the league, I want to win something.

I know where you are coming from marra but if we take that attitude to it's logical conclusion then we might as well pack in now and prepare for a constant battle against relegation with inferior players - this squad is by any standard miles better than previous one's so let's go for it eh'?

i totally agree but how would we approach the possiblity of another 16 games plus a season?

our cup record in recent years, show we struggle to last more than a couple of rounds and until bruce came, we dared not risk our top goalscorer playing.

i would love to see safc playing football in europe but just being a bit realistic and i would worry for our prem status if we did qualify.

I dont give a shite if 'anyone can win a cup' - there's a couple of generations of Sunderland fans that have never seen it happen, nor Sunderland in Europe. What good did finishing seventh under Reid do us if you're looking at it like that?

I can see us falling just short....unless we buy someone in January who is more inventive in the middle of the pitch than what we have....
