Equal pay for female footballers?

And if we can all go back to Hope Solo's comments in the OP's article, she isn't calling for equal pay for male and female players. She is talking specifically about World Cup prize money which goes to national associations, and not directly to players.

So everyone getting outraged just calm down.

Hope Solo was also charged with domestic assault so hardly a good role model to push the women’s game forward. That’s worth getting outraged?

Unfortunately the argument against is usually dominated by mysoginists, which dampens the point somewhat, but why should the male game have higher prize money than the female game?

Women's World Cup: Fifa 'entrenched in chauvinism' over prize money, says Hope Solo

Until the standard increases (which it is doing at a rate which is alarming the people who wish to be over protectionist of the mens game,) it is barmy to suggest that female players should receive equal pay, but the argument for equal prize money is surely valid.
Agree about the prize money but until more people watch womens footy they aint going to get anywhere near the top end of the mens game for wages .In reality a county level under 16's boys team would beat most if not all comers from the womens game!

Sometimes i wonder about people. It's not that people can't have opinions and suggestions but the downright dumbness of the world right now.

Lil Timmy has an orange. Everybody wants that orange so instead of selling it for cheap he charges whatever he likes.

Lil Sally has an apple. Nobodys wants the apple even with sustained promotion of the apple in newspapers to try to make this apple a thing. Sally has to sell the apple for what it's worth.

Fruitcakes.

Nothing stoppping female billionaires from investing and paying for womens football....but they won't women hate other women and it would be up to men to make female football a thing.

The basic argument is let’s make the world a better place and force Timmy to collaborate w Sally and combine the orange and apple into a fruit salad that’s sold and profits shared 50-50, everyone wins.

Thanks for the mention of this, I genuinely didn't know about it. Here's what wiki says about it, if people are interested:

On June 21, 2014, Solo was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault in the fourth degree;[148][149] one against her half-sister and the other against her nephew.[150][151][152][153] She was booked under her married name of Hope Amelia Stevens.[1] After pleading not guilty, she was released the following day.[154] In August, her trial was scheduled for November 4, 2014, but this was later delayed until January 20, 2015.[155][156] On December 30, 2014, the judge ordered more depositions from the defendants and delayed a decision on whether charges against Solo would be dropped until January 6, 2015.[157]

Following her arrest, Solo sat out one game for the Reign[158] and the NWSL allowed her to continue playing soccer through the end of the 2014 season.[159] There was some debate in the media about whether this exemplified a double standard in professional American sports[160] after pro football players Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson were recently suspended by the National Football League after Rice was shown in a previously undisclosed video assaulting his wife in a hotel elevator[161] and Peterson was indicted by a grand jury on a felony charge of child abuse.[162][163][164][165][166] Senator Richard Blumenthal (D – Conn.) sent out a sternly worded letter to U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati admonishing the organization for allowing Solo to remain on the World Cup roster following her arrest and accused them of inadequately addressing the charges of domestic violence.[167]

On January 13, 2015, the judge dismissed the charges against Solo based on a lack of cooperation from both alleged victims. Solo claimed she was defending herself from an attack by her nephew, who is 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m).[168] However, prosecutors filed an appeal with the Superior Court of Washington.[169] In October 2015, the prosecution prevailed in the Superior Court and the charges were reinstated. In June 2016, the state appeals court denied Solo's petition to review the case.[170] On May 24, 2018, the city of Kirkland dismissed all domestic violence charges against her.[171] Attorney Melissa Osman, who represents the city, wrote in court documents the circumstances of the case were "unlikely to recur", and prosecution witnesses did not want to testify.

I would rather support Beth Meade than Harry Kane

One day perhaps but this isn't the biggest challenge facing the women's game right now.

We need to grow the popularity of the game - with young girls, with fans, and then the media and commercial interest will follow. We need to ensure that there are widescale opportunities everywhere for young girls to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment - proper clubs and league structures, qualified and committed coaches etc etc. We need to ensure we have proper governance around the game as it grows - and it make no mistake it's in a period of exceptional growth.

I'm also somewhat bored by men's football frequently being used as a comparator. This isn't about men, and maybe we can do something different, and in many ways something better.

A sensible post, hope you don't get called a misogynist ;). You're right though, pay shouldn't be the main issue currently. If the women's game was generating x amount and some was being filtered off and paid to the men's teams that would be a disgrace, but as it stands they are paid what their clubs can afford based on revenue.

They just need to concentrate on continuing to broaden it's appeal, keep getting girls involved, keep increasing attendances. The more that happens the more the money will naturally increase. Mind, I think it will struggle to differentiate itself from the men's game. I thought, initially, they'd really push the fact that it wasn't the corporate world of men's football, really highlight the family friendly nature etc. Instead we've already seen SAFC fucked over in favour of getting the "big names" from the men's game to the top of the women's game. That's a bit of a shame imo and a missed opportunity to make it different

How many lasses do you know that play football at grass roots level? How many men? When I were a lad, it seemed that every fucker I knew (all male, obvs.) played Sunday morning football, often Saturday afternoons as well for a different team. I have never met a female footballer. Not one. You can't sell something at a premium that is a minority interest.

No shit Sherlock.

The interest in the women's game in the UK isn't there as far as I can see, the 2 best supported women's teams in the UK is Chelsea and Manchester City, there average crowds last year were 1,864 and 1,409 respectively.

They banned it in 1922 because it was too popular. The ban wasn't lifted for 50 years.
Ok, so once the so called ban was lifted why hasn't the women game progressed until the last few years ? Has any womens team actually got their own stadium? Like someone else on this thread has said the two biggest clubs in the UK are Chelsea and Man city yet get less then 2k watching them who's paying the bill's?

Easiest way to sort all of this is to just change the rules so any gender can play in the current “men’s” games...

Same for all sports tbf.

True equality.
