By the way have seen a very good prospect at the DCC u15 county pathway course who was rapid never been involved with Durham before but plays for Marton in NYSD and has represented Cleveland his dad told me.. Some batsmen were taken out of his net as they could not cope!!! So watch this space!!
One of the problems as I see it with the Durham setup is that they dont play enough games whereas the NY/Cleveland set up plays loads. The DCB doesnt have an U11 team for example, NY/Cleveland does. I was told for example that at this years just Sport U11 trophy the NEPL/Tyneside/Durham Cricket League sides hadnt played any games this year yet the NY/Cleveland side had played 10. I'm usually told this makes no difference but frankly it should. The NEPL and Tyneside teams were apparently wiped out by the NY team. It was relayed to me that it was only the public schoolboys/durham City lads in the DCL side who really coped with the NY bowling.Makes you wonder what the other clubs are doing to equip their kids appropriately for games against NY.

Funnily enough I was down at the riverside last night for an event and happened to catch the back end of the DCB U12 session and the start of the DCB U17 session. There were a couple of lads who caught the eye in each age group and when I asked who they were...hey presto they both came from the Cleveland/NY area. I got talking to one parent whose son is putting himself up for selection for one of the DCB teams this year rather than the cleveland team. The parent said though that one of the first questions they had asked the DCB was how many games does the Durham team play. Clearly it was an issue to be sorted out.

It was also interesting to note that the majority of the lads (and one lass!) seemed to come from the smaller clubs such as Blackhall, Sedgefield, Leadgate, Eppleton, Seaton Carew, Annfield Plain etc. where I'm assuming they are given far more opportunities than at the bigger clubs.

I'm always very impressed though by the DCB coaches. Geoff Cook for example was there last night for both U12 and U17 sessions.

At Eppleton the club nominated at least 12 kids from under 10 to under 17 and 10 of them went along.

The surprising thing for me was the fact that the NEPL under 15 course was attended by no more than 14 boys and girls with 2 from Eppleton 2 from Boldon and 3 from Chester le st along with the 3 very talented girls.... Although understandably the majority of the county players who had been in Dubai never attended it was a very poor representation from the 22 team league

I was told, dont know how true it is, that clubs were told this season not to send every man/girl and his dog down to league trials, only those who had a realistic chance of being selected. In the past it was mooted that some clubs sent loads down just to get the extra training from the county irrespective of how good they were. There were about 35 to 40 kids at the U12s (the output from the various league trials I as told) that I assume will be whittled down to 20 or so and about 16 lads (?) at U17 level. Didnt pick out Jack Burnham or the lad Hickey at the U17s so not sure if they have moved onwards and upwards or if there were others missing.

A question for you, are the various age group league sides mixed ie boys and girls?

Don't know about the under 17s to be honest

I know that the young girl who was at the under 12s last night and is from ECC has represented the senior league and last year the NEPl under 11s boys team for the last couple of seasons and I believe will again be able to play at boys under 11s even though she is now under 12..

Think the girls would have to be very gifted to represent older age groups though.
