England's midfield passing last night

You've completely missed my point. Watching the game on Tuesday you could see hendersons job was to sit and hold and the main critisum of him was that the game passed him by.

If the stats show that he did sit and hold, had plently of touches of the ball and rarely lost possession, he did his job.

The statistics aren't useless as long as you apply them with common sense. I remember a few years ago reading that Nicky Butt was the best passer in the league because he had the highest % of completed passes.

Listening to the Football Weekly podcast, the general consensus was that Henderson was to play a Pirlo role (or Alonso), where Barry would be the defensive midfielder for him and Henderson would 'play make' from a deep lying role. However, as they all pointed out, Gareth Barry was utterly f***ing hopeless and offered to support or help to the rookie next to him.

Milners been shite. So has Barry.

How the ferk are we meant to compete (never mind blood in a few youngsters) when we persist on playing shite like that.

Milner was superb at Villa last year in fairness, ran the whole show for them from Centre Midfield.

Now he's went to City and is back to being a winger, and looks a bit shite.

I totally agree that the job Henderson was given was as you described.

The stats also show that he passed the ball a few times and had a certain % of completions

What they fail to show is that he (and that clown Barry) allowed the Franch midfield to waltz round them time and time again vitrually unchallenged....which is what I am basing my criticism of his performance on...as a holding midfielder his job is to prevent the other side from getting a clear run at the back four - and in that respect he failed

If he was played in a more naturaly position he may have given a far better account of himself .... or if he was played alongside someone capable of moving around the pitch at greater than snail's pace he would have done a lot better -- shame Cattermole was not alongside him - although I don't rate his footballing ability he certainly would have got amongst the French more than Barry did

I agree with that. Thought Henderson looked sharp very early on but soon got caught out, he was way off pace for their 1st.

I've seen loads of people say he did nowt, I thought he got involved quite a lot, had a lot of touches and did fairly well in possession(which the stats show) but he'll never be a screening midfielder.

Agree. Looked like he could step into the England team with ease but it just hasn't happened. Probably due to his move to City like.

He has gone from class to "shite" in no time whatsoever.
