Absolutely - it was getting to the stage where there was a question mark over every one of the top 8 bar Root. I'm glad Burns made some runs when conditions were difficult and Johnny getting a big score would take any pressure of him. He is easily one of our best 6 batsmen but really needed this knock.

Love Bairstow like. He should be averaging more than 35 after 76 matches given his talent, but a batsman averaging 35 in this team is worth a batsman averaging 45.

We are just too reliant on Root. If he gets out soon I wouldn’t even back the rest of them to get us to parity never mind build an actual lead. Bairstow being comfortably our second best batsman says it all unfortunately about what a mess we are in - reality is he shouldn’t be good enough to get a game but he’s significantly better than the other options we have

He is a far better keeper / batsman than Tim Paine for starters and would get in NZ team in that position also.
