He's just been dropped by Essex for poor form. 23 wickets in his last 9 games.
This is a comparison between the 6 names mentioned as spinners for England based on this season.

Tredwell 8 wickets in 4 games at 57.37 (142 overs)
Riley 32 wickets in 9 games at 26.90 (271 overs)
Kerrigan 28 wickets in 11 games at 34.25 (337 overs)
Monty 23 wickets in 9 games at 31.47(256 overs)
Borthwick 7 wickets in 9 games at 62.57 (99 overs)
Ali 11 wickets in 8 games at 42.09 (156 overs) includes test matches

Monty has the test pedigree and will be the only bowler cook will probably have any confidence in.

Slim f***ing pickings! Have we got T20 to blame for this? Or is it the early season start where spinners rarely get a twirl and most end up concentrating on their batting in order to get a game (Borthwick)

You can just see England selecting Tredwell......

He's hardly knocking the door down though. I'd give Ali a run for now. Since India 2012 Panesar's record is terrible in tests.

I completely agree but whats the point in having Ali as our main spinner if cook refuses to bowl him(I don't see this changing in this series)

Agree. That is why I believe the Captain should be part of the selection process, OR the coach makes the decisions on who bowls and when.

With Ben Stokes included England have 9 players with test match hundreds for the first time in history

But we've not got a spinner
