England v Germany

Who would you replace him with?
Not sure, that's not my job. I don't know who would be interested, who is available etc. But we've targeted the next world cup for years, we've got a good squad of players. If we want to have a real go at that tournament we've got to start being able to find a way to beat someone decent. Obviously it's often mentioned that we came up short against the better sides in the world cup. This Germany aren't great, if we come up short again after a fairly unimpressive group stage then I think they've got a decision to take over whether he is the right man to go into a huge tournament next year. Who they replace him with would be for others to look into, but we've got a good crop of players (albeit with limitations) we can't keep qualifying well, getting through the group stage, then losing as soon as we have a knock out against anyone good

If we lose this I'd probably be sacking Southgate tbh

I'd consider it. If we can't get past this German team under him, really can't see how we're ever going to be an 'elite' team in Qatar.
Who would you replace him with?
My choice would be Potter. A good technical coach who has proven he can build a functional system and play good, attacking football. I actually don't think we'll get beat though. I'm confident we'll win.

Aye, I think theres every chance we win, but if we don't you'd have to ask questions. Really good attacking players, 2 goals in a group stage then defeat to a fairly average Germany isn't going to give any confidence that he'll suddenly get it right in Qatar.

It may well happen mate but not sure it will change everything. We have had every type of manager imaginable and the result has always been the same.I used to be the ultimate, optimistic England fan but 55 years of hurt has worn me out. We just don't have the self belief and confidence as a nation for some reason,a stark contrast to Germany who do well in tournaments even with weaker teams.

I agree, but we can't look at past failures as a reason not to change this time. With the players available we should be capable of beating someone decent in a knock out. If we fall short again you'd need to look at changing things imo
Fair enough if we get to a semi and lose to the Dutch or something, but I at least want to see us beat one major nation in a knock out to give a bit of confidence for Qatar. We need to be seeing progression with what is a decent squad, albeit one with limitations

Fair comments, now you've got me hoping again !

I think the fact its at home is a factor as well. This isn't a great German side, it's one that almost looks like it needs Low out the door (which I know happens at the end of the tournament). I fully expect they'll improve once the new person comes in but it would be a surprise to me if they went and won this tournament.

So for Southgate he's got a relatively (by their standards) mediocre Germany, we're at home, we've got some of the best attacking options in the tournament, he's got a key defender back, maybe even Henderson as well. It should be set up for a decent team to go up through the gears and knock this Germany side out. Could go either way, but like I say if he's incapable of getting us through this tie then I don't really see the point in letting him have another go at a world cup. Hopefully we'll put a good performance in and finally beat a major nation in a knock out for the first time since 96. Then I'll see it as at least a sign of progression

Andy Brassell was on Talksport this morning, he can't understand the stick that Southgate and England are getting because of the way they're playing.

He thinks that it's exactly the way a team needs to play in order to progress in tournament football.

He used the Slovakia game in the last Euros to illustrate the point that England used to try to win a game right from the start but if they hadn't made a breakthrough within the first 60 minutes, they'd run out of ideas.

He reckons that Southgate is drumming it into them that they need to be patient rather than risking everything chasing a goal.

Yeah same here. He can still go out with his head held relatively high considering the years before he took over were proper awful for England and he managed to get them to a WC semi-final as well as bringing through a new generation of players.

Hopefully we can get in a manager that plays good football. Would love Wenger! Although I could see Eddie Howe getting it.

No matter who the manager is they’ve still got the same problem to overcome: some of the players are stupid, unprofessional and simply won’t do what they are told.
This C19 crisis has merely underlined this. Mount n Chilwell this week, Walker and Grealish last year and the two idiots in sent home from Iceland may just be the tip of the recent iceberg. It’s always been this way with some English players, Gazza playing tennis for three hours the day before the Germany SF in Italia90, the Hong Kong piss up in 96 etc etc.

There’s always enough talent available to stroll through qualifying for tournaments. Getting out of the group stages often proves a bit rocky but we mostly manage it. After that it often needs ET and/or penalties to progress against teams with no proven guality whatsoever. Then we come up against a quality team of its era and footballs coming home alright. Straight home.
To go toe to toe with the best requires skill, professionalism and an ability to follow direction from the coaching staff. 15 months into a pandemic yet another two of Southgates selections have proven they’re incapable of the latter.

Clough achieved more in his career than every England manager put together bar Ramsey by not having the very best players available but by blending a team of greats, very goods and merely goods into a cohesive disciplined force. Maybe it’s time for England to stop throwing the best individual talents of the era against the wall and hoping something sticks?

I’ve been of the belief that Howes hanging on for summet. Even if it’s only the U21 job.

Aye. We'll get caught up in the occasion - which to their minds doesn't really exist - and they'll play the game.

They'll probably meet their proper rivals, the Dutch, in the semis.

Well you say that, but they stayed in the game against a decent French side, and had the ball in and around their area plenty.

I'd hate to meet the Germany that turned up against Portugal.

I only saw the goals last night, but they still got the job done.

What if we play like we have in the groups?
We will be going home.

I expect Germany to move out of 1st gear...

We don't look as if we have another gear to shift to.

No idea who Andy Brassell is but he’d have to be pretty stupid to not understand any stick. England have scored 2 (two) goals in 3 (three) games at home against Czechia, Scotland and an aging Croatia team.
In comparison Hungary finished bottom of their group and scored two in one game against Germany in Munich.

Andy Brassell has probably forgotten more about European football than most of us actually know.

I wouldn't be overly confident.

Scoring goals looks like a real problem for us. I think we're probably the team with the least goals left in the competition.
Just checked, we are.
But also, along with Italy, the least conceded. I'm not overly confident, but neither overly pessimistic, I think it will be tight but Germany have conceded in every game and 5 across the 3 games.

Depends very much on Southgate, I’d he goes too defensive and plays rice and Phillips I think we’ll get beat.

This. He needs to go for it. We have plenty up front to scare the daylights out of them. I still think their mentality is stronger than ours. If we go a goal up or even two up then the Germans won't give up. Yet if they score first I think it'll be disastrous for us.

Germany have been poor for about 4 years. Its not the easy tie people make it out to be ridiculously. They couldn't even beat hungary.

We will trouble them I think

That’s some industrial levels of spin mind. I’d like to see England get similar credit for having the ball “in and around the penalty area” against a good team, or for “getting the job done” against a poor team (have they not just done that?)
