Empire's Top films of the past 30 years

Empire 30: Vote For Your Favourite Films Of The Last 30 Years

Pick your favourite film for each year. By all means put them in here too so we can all belittle your choices or praise you for being a film aficionado.

Don't feel like you have to put them all in but if you can nail down one per year you've don well.
So far I'm on...

1989 - Batman
1990 - Home Alone
1991 - The Silence of the Lambs
1992 - Batman Returns
1993 - Jurassic Park
1994 - The Lion King (tough year to pick from)
1995 - Seven (tough year to pick from)
1996 - Scream (tough year to pick from) - Purely for Wes Craven creating the "Teen Slasher" genre
1997 - LA Confidential - I couldn't vote for Titanic
1998 - Saving Private Ryan
1999 - The Matrix - Still an incredible film. I refuse to believe there are sequels.
2000 - Gladiator - Predictable shout, but still a great film.
2001 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
2002 - 28 Days Later
2003 - Monster - It would be easy to pick Kill Bill Pt 1
2004 - SAW - I wouldn't usually pick a horror film, but the twist in SAW was very well done. It's just a shame they've ruined it by doing a ton more
2005 - Batman Begins
2006 - V for Vendetta (UK release 2006)
2007 - Stardust - Neil Gaiman does quality work. I thought No Country for Old Men was good, but I enjoyed that more.
2008 - The Dark Knight
2009 - Zombieland
2010 - The King's Speech
2011 - Captain America: The First Avenger
2012 - The Avengers
2013 - 12 Years A Slave (tough year to pick from)
2014 - The LEGO Movie (really tough year to pick from) - I make absolutely no apologies for this.
2015 - The Hateful Eight
2016 - Deadpool
2017 - Thor Ragnarok
2018 - Avengers: Infinity War
2019 - Joker - I have a good feeling about it. Not easy to pick as it's only July but there's my shouts!
Some canny films up until 2010. After that it seems to go tits up.

What’s the craic with all of these marvel comic ilk films?

Bear in mind, it says favourites;

1989; See No Evil, Hear No Evil
1990; Home Alone
1991; Terminator 2
1992; Home Alone 2
1993; Last Action Hero
1994; The Mask
1995; Toy Story

1997; Titanic
1998; Mulan
1999; Toy Story 2
2000; Battle Royale
2001; Lord Of The Rings: FOTR
2002; Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers
2003; Lord Of The Rings: ROTK

2007; Hot Fuzz
2008; The Dark Knight

2010; Toy Story 3
2011; Warrior
2012; Django Unchained
2013; The Wolf Of Wall Street
2014; Kingsman: Secret Service
2015; Mad Max: Fury Road
2016; The Nice Guys
2017; Blade Runner 2049
2018; Avengers: Infinity War
2019; Captain Marvel

No lies I’ve left some better films off because I’ve maybe only seen them once or I value other films’ watchability. Like The Mask over Pulp Fiction. For some, like Mad Max & Blade Runner, I’ve only seen them once but they made a great impression on me.

Looking through made me realise how little I’ve seen seen like, so many I’ve been meaning to watch for ages.

Class film. Probably preferred it to the one I chose. But it didn't come up on lists.
Went to see that at the pictures. Keaton was brilliant.

Hit the road jack....
I love it but I do wonder if it would get made today. Can't remember it being massively popular at the time apart from in my group of mates.

The spenks have taken over.
I usually find IMDB is a good guide as to how good a film is apart from it is heavily weighted towards Marvel type films. I think it is because franchises encourage fan boy behaviour.

What all these lists shows is that from 1989-2004 there were several great films a year and then 2005 onwards you get 1 or 2 films if you’re lucky. Original ideas of story telling get worse every year as companies cash in on commercial franchises, i.e Marvel.
I struggled for the last 3 or 4 years, I don't think it's that, I saw few of my top films at the cinema. I watched them at home, often years later.

Wouldn't do if we were all the same!
I'd probably watch Goodfellas over Home Alone these days, but as Christmas films go, it's a belter albeit probably a bit dated now
