But if my memory serves me right it was the day or week after Elvis had died & we sang Wise Men Say in respect for the very first time...obviously Hull in recent years

Nah, he was drafted in the late fifties. Basically the old blokes were raging because he went on the Ed Sullivan Show for the third time in a sparkly waistcoat and mascara. The previous appearance he’d more or less caused riots.
Even though they refused to show him from the waist down this time, he still gave their wives them feelings. He also insisted on singing a black spiritual song against Sullivan’s wishes. The blokes all said nah f*** this and it was announced a few days after that he’d be drafted. They sent him to West Germany for two years.
