Durham v Durham University

I have to say that this all looks pretty much like a piece of piss for DCCC today yet again. I know that this is the curtain raising game for all the counties but surely it would be worthwhile at least trying to schedule in a game with say Yorkshire or Notts prior to the start of the season. This game just doesnt seem to do a lot for us. Must be difficult though trying to fit cricket in so early in April.

I'd disagree. Everyone is getting a bat, a few have had a good bat. The bowlers have all had a bowl and took a few wickets and no injuries as yet touch wood. They'll all be feeling good and eager for the real thing next week.

What more can you want?

Some more competition?

I've watched both days and the University are hopeless. I cant remember the last time they presented any sort of challenge at all to Durham. Is this really the best preparation for Somerset on Sunday? Its like shelling peas for DCCC.

They could do all that between themselves. 1st XI vs 2nd XI

Next you'll be suggesting that Emgland don't play a warm up against St Kitts and Nevis but just instead play an extra test where the result don't count towards the final series score... At least it would be proper cricket practice and that. Donut.

How's he a donut? Most counties have played a Uni and a proper county in pre-season, some have even had 3 friendlies. Whereas we've only played 3 days against a glorified club side.

It's understandable that people are a little worried the lads are undercooked for going into the start of the season. We've not won at Taunton in years, yet are going into a game underprepared - while Somerset have played two counties and a University.

What was it Roy Keane said? Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

I get the argument, but I am not totally convinced a practice match against another county would make loads of different, it would still be a friendly and people wouldn't be going full tilt

It's April. And as much as its been good weather this week it was snowing last. Due to the crammed fixture list the season has to start earlier and earlier nearly every year and because of that it gets closer and closer to the 'bad weather months'. Teams have to go to the UAE to practice their outdoor crixket as they can't get outdoors at all in Durham as it pisses it down most of April. It's easier in Somerset to play more games where the winters aren't as harsh and the groundsman can work on the ground nearly all year round... Due to the weather Id be surprised if the rivers die would have new playable any earlier than this week.

Just because they haven't played another county doesn't mean they haven't been preparing, they'll have been netting non stop since god knows when. And as many people on here like to claim- they're netting against the 'best bowling attack in the LVCC'.

Somerset have played more outdoor warm ups and geographically they are able to. Durham haven't and so they went away. And couldn't get a better opposition than the MCCU side this week as most other teams are playing the other very well-respected, highly talented, england cricketers producing MCCU teams.

It gives the perfect opportunity to give everyone a bat and a bowl outdoors and get back into the swing of it. If we had played Yorkshire just how friendly would it have been? Just how much time would some have the batters got out in the middle? It's called 'pre season' for a reason. It's before the competitive SEASON starts. Enjoy it.

On another note. John Hastings bowling buffet, too many no balls

That will be the same England who borrowed St Kitts batsmen today to make the game more competitive?

Durham 1st XI vs Durham 2nd XI would be more competitive & useful. As I've just posted, England provided St Kitts with batsman today, obviously to make the game more competitive as bowling them out for 70 odd (or whatever shit total it was), clearly just isn't competitive and useful.

It was said at the members event last week, netting indoors can't prepare you for the early season wickets.

As for you mentioning the Durham weather, what's stopping us playing an away friendly?

Leicester as a club look shot to pieces. The ECB will be called in to give serious help soon

Jennings gone to his 100. Took his time. Backbone of the innings. Be nice too see him carry his bat.
See Leicester won today by 344 runs.
What "serious help" can the ECB give them ?

Relegate them to the minor counties, bring Ireland in as another first class county with a view to 10 years them getting Test status.

In 10 years time promote the best minor county to take their place.

I am aware that this would never happen, but would be good craic to have a Durham away day to Ireland.

A good run out for all of the bowlers, apart from Colly for some reason, plus Borthwick was given a good spell.
