Durham student Mathew Hedges

Convicted by Johnny Foreigner so obviously completely innocent.

Well to be fair, the charge that he is spying is obviously political and completely ludicrous. Given he's a PH.D student specializing in Middle East affairs it is obvious he has went there to reserch and overstepped the mark by asking someone about sensitive material or going where he shouldn't.

It's an unbelievable outcome nonetheless. These gulf state arab monarchies are horrendous (Qatar/Saudi/UAE), yet the west continue to bend over backwards in supporting them near unconditionally whilst pointing figures at similar countries (Iran) for doing the very things they do.

I agree about them being repressive regimes. The charges probably relate as you say to overstepping the mark.

The point I was trying to clumsily hammer home was the immediate jump made to question any conviction in a foreign land. There is a rush by some to ask that the laws of our land are followed yet quick to condemn other countries.

what was he actually doing to get arrested for espionage?

was he asking a few questions or was he trying to obtain classified documents...theres no real details. Spying is just been used as a blanket term
