Durham Miners Gala

All tit for tat from both sides. That said Colin Raine is very passionate about Durham and was very vocal against the council when closing the DLI museum, so I think it's unfair to suggest on those posts that he doesn't care. Regardless of that it's a sad indictment on the whole event now, be exactly the same again next year. Load of bollocks and a shame for Durham

it's not like. it's a left wing solidarity event, its about trade unions and socialism. its all inclusive. these right wing fuck nuts turned up to cause bother, simple as. not tit for tat at all. they knew exactly what they were doing. thankfully the good, normal members of the public didn't rise to the bait and ignored them by the sounds of it, and the police did their jobs.

its got nowt to do with the union flag. like people have said, the union flag is prominent on loads of the colliery banners. its nowt to do with Palestine either. its to do with a group of people trying to start trouble, and incite hatred with innocent members of the public

Mind you the photo of the group (on the above link) standing talking to the police up near the cathedral doesn't appear to be showing a group causing any sort of aggro/hurling abuse. I'd have expected to see some videos of them causing bother to be honest.

So you say its not tit for tat from both sides, then say "it's nowt to do with Palestine either"..... So why bloody wave Palestine flags for in Durham???? There are suggestions this group were abused (I've seen one video of a lady giving them grief) and a photo claiming someone else spat at them.... No way of knowing if the spitting incident is true though. The whole event is a farce now, Palestine, Free Tommy, Donald Trump, meanings of Union Flag/Royal Flag, Bollocks To Brexit (even though Durham had a 40000 majority for Brexit). Absolutely nothing to do with Durham.

Collin Raine - well they certainly got a reaction off 1 lady who couldn't answer anything.

So if anyone on here is STILL unsure about what The Big Meeting is all about:

“The Durham Miners' Association have a long tradition of opposing racism and fascism, and the Gala is a day of unity and solidarity with all those who have faced struggle, and those who continue to face struggle.”

Pretty clear to me, but no doubt some posters on here will still allow this to go over their heads.

Aye WHED, the reason those lovely chaps look canny in those pics next to the cathedral is 'cos it's an obvious (to some) publicity pic. Earlier they were trying to muscle in behind bands and banners they had no affiliation with. They tried to get in next to Gregg's at about 11am but were told to fuck off. They had a flag waving hissy fit and decided to head up to Palace Green. Also those people complaining about unions may not be aware that they pay for a lot of the event as a whole and a lot of the brass bands. Not to blow my own trumpet (SWIDT), but I've paid a few hundred quid to support the event this year. If it was left to just mining people it would die. Slightly pissed off I missed Billy Bragg as I had to carry the banner back to Redhills at 3pm. A fantastic celebration. Long may it continue.

Fair do I just find it a bit odd nobody has any photos of these dafties allegedly acting up considering the event is absolutely full of photos on social media. The mining/union stuff in my opinion is what it's all about as you say they throw £££ at the event. The rest of the nonsense I'm not sure what that brings and not sure how it's associated with Durham. Be interesting to see how it all goes next year as a group of about 10 people are the main talking point.

The main reason they're a talking point at all is due to their attention seeking both at the event and even more so on social media afterwards. I suppose what they set out to do has worked, although it's still sad as owt.

I agree but it seems they got a fair bit of attention at the meeting itself. No photos or videos of nuisance behaviour which I find a bit odd though

I saw them bouncing around the market place. They weren't doing anything criminal but they stood out even with all of the bands and various banners there. I figure they stood out as their behaviour was "different", which as I say isn't a crime.

In the time I've been going to the gala it's very left leaning. They were tipping up singing songs and waving flags about a right wing icon.

Equivalently, it would be along the lines of tipping up to an SAFC match waving a Newcastle flag and singing Newcastle songs and then complaining when you were given a police presence and eventually asked to move on.

Can I say I was more offended by the SAFC badge on the Footy Lads Alliance (or whatever they're called) flag? I'm British so don't mind the Union flag. I'm no royalist but the Royal Standard doesn't offend me, it has no place at the Gala however unless the Queen is in attendance (unlikely). Let's be honest, they got the reaction they wanted and the obligatory social media clip.

You really have to be either thicker than whale spunk or a sympathiser to think this bunch simply turned up to support the gala and were turned away for having the British flag. According to a picture I saw they also had US flags too? On the weekend right wing poster boy Trump was in the country? Pull the other one.

Looks like they got what they wanted though so that will please some on here - the reaction and the opportunity to cry about the lefties hating the UK flag.

Dickheads.

Look who’s sticking up for the though. The same nuggets who defend everything they do
