Durham MCCU opener Rob Gibson

Twisted

i don't pretend to understand how the MCC really works but i find this both promising and confusing.

Gibson is the third Durham MCCU player in four seasons to win the prestigious Award, following in the footsteps of 2011 winner, Somerset’s Chris Jones, and last season’s recipient Ivo Hobson.

somerset's chris jones and rob gibson plays for hampshire 2nds... so does this just mean they study at durham university? i assume they would be attached to a county before they started university so they would be durham mccu players but already been at the county of their birth since childhood, is that right?

Its quite rare for a Uni player to go on to play for the same county although Matt Milnes is currently playing for DCCC 2nds.

The talent that has came through Durham Uni is unreal (Athers Nasser Foster Strauss etc), not sure how much credit Graeme Fowler can take for that but virtually none of it has gone on to directly benefit the DCCC playing staff afaik.

Not sure if the uni can take much credit for those lads. They were already excellent players at 18 and chose to study at Durham rather than play cricket. There was no centre of excellence in place then so the only games will have been the usual inter university competition

Athers went to Cambridge like but the point still stands.

Whilst on the subject, anyone got any thoughts/had any dealings with Graeme Fowler? Enjoy some of his tweets. Cant decide if hes a really canny bloke with some good craic or a tedious pompus old prick.

Apologies, not sure where I got that from. Im sure I've missed a few other crackers from Durham Uni that escape me.

Bishnoi who played against Durham at the beginning of the season for Durham Uni is playing at Annfield Plain CC.

Fowler does come across a bit odd at times but tbf he does suffer some mental illness which he dissvusses openly and refreshingly on twitter. Good luck to the bloke - dream job

Yeah the subject of his mental health is never far away from twitter. I struggle to decipher what tweets could be as a result of his MH issues & what are a result of him seeming to be a bit of a bellend.

IE: You should see the clip of him now, looks like a complete hobo yet he finds it hilarious to mock durham 'locals' when he ventures into local pubs/towns etc
