Durham Big Meeting

The vast majority will be there for what it is, solidarity, history & a good drink with your mates & brethren. FTDM & anyone else who wants to make out it's something it isn't. Didn't notice the same fuss about July 12th marches...

Never saw any bother. Only blemish on the day was the presence of some B&W shirts but you can't have everything.

Most were having a great time.

Used to pitch up with lads from Fishburn/Trimdons. Had to retire hurt a couple of times but I'm a complete lightweight where drinking is concerned. Great day out, though...

Jeremy Corbyn said he's going and it feels like going home. He grew up in a massive country pile in Shropshire.

What’s that got to do with anything?

The fact he had what appears to be a privileged upbringing means it’s all the more likely he would grow to despise people like us.

Yet he doesn’t, he’s actively campaigned all of his political life for working class people and for fairness and equality across the board.

Just back home , our band was from the Scottish Borders so came back to our village for scran and drinks, great day out again , only down side ( although funny ) was a woman probably in her 60’s flashing her tits off to various bandsmen/women

Are people really arguing on here about events 35 years ago? Let it go!
Its a trait of most of them they're living in the past, ones with sense found new jobs and let it go. You don't still see the farmers constantly talking about the damage Blair did to the traditional industry of a lot of Durham

Taken from Alan Mardghum’s piece in today’s Souvenir Programme from The Big Meeting.

It’s a message that more than a few on here would do well to read and remember who the real enemy is.

“It is particularly important that we remember where we come from in these days when the far right of politics is raising its ugly head once again.

Our commitment to unity and solidarity is based on respecting and defending our people and our communities.

The far right agenda seeks to divide us from those collective endeavours - setting communities against each other and driving wedges between families.

These actions are orchestrated international by the super rich. They have one clear intention - the oppression and subjugation of organised, working class politics across the globe.

Only last month, Donald Trump was promoting private, foreign ownership of our NHS while being feted by a Tory government.

Brexit is another prime example of this divisive movement.

We are distracted from the real issues facing our communities and families while the Tories drag us through the political mire.

The Tories started this mess and cannot get us out of it.

We should not fall for the rhetoric of big business and the agenda of the self-interested right.

The only solution is a General Election and the return of a socialist government led by Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell.

We must return to politics that serve our people and our communities.

Labour values are our values - rooted in collective effort and progress for our children and our children’s children.”

usually less arrests on Big Meeting Day than the average Saturday, but don't let that stop the tossers agenda.

It was pretty lairy later on

We were getting a cab back, and there was a bunch of pissed lads in the taxi queue calling the drivers every racist name under the sun. There were a couple of police there but rather than intervene they were trying to persuade the asian cab drivers to get the racists out of the city.

All got very unpleasant. We spoke to the 2 police on, and they explained that there were hardly any police in duty and there wasn't enough of them to keep order, their only job was to try and stop it kicking off too badly

We ended up walking home rather than get a cab as it was just too unpleasant. Not a great night.

The ‘real enemy’ do me a favour.

Driving wedges between families! over the top nonsense

The gala should be about celebrating tradition, hard working miners and the fantastic communities they were and we were part of!!!

Not turned in a political hate campaign!

Even if it has it should be about working together not enemies!

Jesus, you really don’t f***ing get it do you? It is staring so obviously at you, right between the eyes, yet somehow you’ve let it go completely over your head

Unless you’re pro-right wing?
