Doesnt mince his words our Sam

F*ck that. We might as well bring Buckley, bridcutt and Graham back in then. Work hard as f*ck them lads... Doesn't matter that they're not up to the job. They'll come off tired and that's all that counts, innit?

Whilst we're making the likes of Collins, Bardsley and Nosworthy player of the year because they try hard, we're all but f*cked.

Actually, didn't Kenwyn win it once? That twat's even lazier than Lens.

You missed my point. I was suggesting that just because you're a quality forward player, doesn't mean you shouldn't bust a gut for the team when you're NOT on the ball. You should still graft getting back to defend. I wasn't on about not so good players---

I am not sure maths is his strong point however. By definition half of players are going to be below average. It's rather like school performance where minister come out with fatuous phrases about wanting all schools to be above average.

The thing is, he is talking about the average work rate in the league, not the club. I think it its probably fair to say our teams average skill is worse than the league average (although impossible to measure that) so the only way we can get an average performance out of the team is if their workrate is higher than the league average.

Why would we want to settle for average anyway?

The bottom line though is that Sam is using facts to show his players that they aren't trying hard enough and obviously hoping that will get them to try a bit harder. I have no problem with that.

Lens has undoubted quality. Hope Sam can find a way to get him in the team as he makes a difference going forward.

We have to find a way of fitting him in the side, he's been our only creative threat this season.

The football can't possibly get duller than its been for the last few seasons.

The Southampton game was every bit as dull as anything O'Neill or Poyet served up.

It can and probably will.

As bad as anything since we were promoted.

I said on here a couple of weeks ago that I didn't think I'd ever see a worse game than that Monday night game against Stoke under Bruce but Christ that ran it close.

That's not necessarily the case, he's probably got stats for the whole league so he can see what the average player in each position in the league does in terms of work rate. Assuming that's the case then there's no reason why he can't use that as a benchmark and require all of our players to be above the average for their position. In many cases they are less than average in terms of quality compared to the rest of the league so the least they should be doing is trying to make up for it in terms of effort

Edit: ignore me, just saw Roger has covered all this!

Worryingly though I've seen players not play to their best ,be subbed and then played next game ,with the same result .under Sam I mean, and worse subs come on and be worse than the player they've replaced,,

Well, that's the side of him that has had supporters of most clubs he's managed wanting rid of him........graft over flair.......it's going to be dull as fuck.

At least he's not just written him off completely i suppose.....but we need our best (most talented) players on the pitch at all times.....regardless of what the charts and graphs say.
I can remember when we had graft and no flair. Recently its been no graft and no flair.
I prefer the former but also believe that if you dont graft flair is pointless.

Probably our most creative player. I don't really give too much of a sh*t if he tracks back enough. Why should that really be his job anyway? Just get him on there terrifying defences and let the defence and defensive midfielders do the job they're being overpaid for, instead wanting to go marauding up the pitch. Lens can be the difference between staying in this division or not. We simply don't have another player like him.

He's not getting game time because of lack of effort and yet Rodwell has been brought on when we're chasing the game! Whilst I do have faith in Sam, that's just b*llocks that, like.

Clearly sam is tinkering to find his best lineup as he stated...

He's seen chodders the passenger now for himself... if he sees the pitch again, we should should all be worried with BSA...

It's obviously fair enough to expect players to work hard, regardless of their ability but I'd be far more convinced if his place hadn't been taken by plodders like Toivonen, Gomez and Rodwell (none of whom are exactly workhorses) in the last game.

The best players do graft though.
The Barca team of recent years, Shankly & Paisleys scousers, Kendalls reidy era lot, Fergies 'class of 92", Beckenbaur/Muller/Breitner era Bayern & Germany, germany in the last WC, Steins "Lisbon Lions", Revies Leeds, Sacchi & Capellos Milan, early 70s Ajax & Holland etc etc etc etc even Stokoes 73 team & primetime Reidy at SAFC did anarl. The best teams ally craft with graft.
If theyve no craft then graft will have to suffice but the graft has to come first otherwise their just playing at it instead of working at it.

Disagree. If a winger can't be arsed to track back then it leaves the full back exposed to a 2 on 1, a winger is still a midfielder and it's a position you must work hard defensively in as well as going forward.

"With each position, I have the levels of an elite performer and an average performer for a Premier League player.

“It’s easy for me to monitor.

“It’s not just Jeremain, but some of our players have been told that they haven’t reached the average and I expect them to reach that average very quickly."

Good to see our players are being monitored so closely now. Hopefully they take the hint and up their games more frequently than the final 6-7 weeks of the season.

The thing is this info has been available since BSAs Bolton days.
Have SAFC been unwilling to pay for it previously? Have we had it but not known wtf it was? Where we unwilling to use it? Did we know HOW to use it? Did the board stop previous managers publicaly shaming the players? There must be some explanation as to why theyve not been dig out in public before because it seems to me to be an obvious use for it.
Mebbes the board have finally accepted that theyve wasted hundreds of millions on shite and given BSA the nod to do it as we're in the last chance saloon before the xmas music even starts in the shops. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
