The Football Supporters' Federation are conducting a quick straw-poll of fans up and down the country. There's only two questions, and it will only take a minute to fill in. We'd be much obliged if you could. Just follow the link below

http://tinyurl.com/3ad6lau

For your troubles, everyone who fills it in gets entered into a free draw to win a copy of Football Manager 2011, just because we're that nice.

Cheers,

FSF

of course it should be in place but it will never happen.

look at the gordon taylor of the PFA. he still spouts the short career bollocks, which may apply to players in div 2 and below but the rest should all be millionaires if they have a career of 10 years.

though a career of about 2 months will have some set up for life

it is disgusting and hardly a penny of all the money generated is given back to reducing the cost of actually attending a game

There is nothing wrong with the system as it is, just daft Chairman paying too much. The only people to blame for the high wages are the people writing the cheques.

Like everything tho, if its given a free reign then somebody somewhere will abuse it for power. Soon enough it gets out of hand as all players/teams compete and it ends like it is now with some dipshit scumbag who's only talent is to kick a ball about for 90 minutes earning more money than a brain surgeon. Fair? Is it bollocks.

I'm all for a wage cap, but as said it would never happen.

All a wage cap will do is skew the market.

Footballers wages vs Brain surgeons is irrelevant. It's supply and demand.

No offence to any brain surgeons on here.

of course there should be. i dont buy the whole 'supply and demand' shite. its out of hand as no-one is regulating it. football is, but shouldnt be, seen as a business first and foremost. if the people in charge can make a quick a buck, then fuck everything else. its funny how football and footballers can be above the law when it suits them, but mention a wage cap and all of a sudden its against human rights or some f***ing bollocks. i'm not an economist, or a chairman of a football club, but for the good of the game this is one thing that needs to be introduced. if it forces the better players abroad then so be it, at least we will still have our local clubs to support for generations to come. this issue (grouped together with ticket prices and the general treatment of modern footy fans) is in the top 3 of my biggest gripes with football along with safe standing, and play acting/diving

I like the idea of a squad wage cap. You have a figure that no club can exceed for their squad, within that you can pay whatever you like to an individual player.

So, if you want to pay 11 superstars comedy wages you can still have them, but that's all you can have and then you've got U-21s as backup. Other, more sensible teams will give themselves more options for a long season of injuries and suspensions.

It's already there. It's how much money you can get through the door and what you can borrow.

Clubs should have to pass some financial test but any decent accountant would be able to change stuff.

Clubs will eventually cotton on to the fact that going into debt to buy and pay players will ALWAYS eventually end in tears.

how could this be done?

they have a wage, then image rights, then advertising deals, then bonuses (ffs bonuses for people on thousands a week), class themselves as a business, to avoid certain taxes, get paid in different currencies depending on the exchange rate of the time.

they also drive endorsed motors, hardly pay a penny when out and about, due to letting their names be mentioned when going to a place.

fees for interviews in the press and tv media.

the list could go on.

they is even an event, which they cancelled last summer, due to take place next summer A3 skills event, when gerrard, rooney and others will receive £500 grand each for two days "work"

they also have deals where the club pays the tax, so they actually receive £1000s a week in there accounts, so the club bears the cost of ni and tax.

i blame jimmy hill

No, why should it be in place? How many other businesses have such restrictions?

What i'd like to see if chairmen/managers have enough balls to tell the players they're paid too much and reduce wages...that won't happen tho.

Which is why they should be forced to do it.

Football is a sport and should be treat that way. In the last 20 years only 4 teams have won the title and two of them pretty much bought it.

Thats not good for football

It can't happen because the power in the game is massively in favour of the players. You've essentially got a billion pound business in the hands of uneducated manchildren. Only when the 'Someone else will pay me what I want' mentality stops can we get some sanity back into the game.

I agree, the people writing the cheques are bonkers. But I think it will settle down, now that the Klondike that was the early Sky deals have levelled out. I think the Chairmen just assumed money was going up every year.

If a club is getting £50m in income, they should be able to balance the books. I think that is what we are aiming for and once it is stable the club will make small profits. Bruce is part of this because he has a track record of getting bargains.

The business is in the hands of the Chairmen/owners NOT the players. The players can demand what they want, nobody has to meet their demands.

Its a commercial business - the players should be paid whatever they can get.

Otherwise, where will the money go? Profit to owners?

It certainly wouldn't result in cuts to ticket or Sky TV prices.

You're only looking at England though, a wage cap would have to be applied to all of Europe and who would dictate what it is set to? League football is a competition and it needs to be set up in a way where clubs can make their own decisions to gain advantages where possible. I do think there should be rules to prevent clubs running at stupid losses but capping wages isn't a good option...anyway, it would only take one player to run to the European Courts and the whole system would be out the window.

The power should come down to the people who pay the wages, they need to realise they're paying stupidly over the odds but until all clubs do then wages won't settle down. Also, lets now kid ourselves that football is the only sport where ludicrous wages are paid, American Football and Basketball are much worse.
