Do the Scots actually hate the English?

Yes. Yes, they do. To a man, the Scots all hate the English. That'll be precisely why I've lived and worked in Glasgow for nearly 27 years (and both lived and worked in some of its roughest, classic nationalistic areas) without ever having an ounce of bother, trouble or bigotry aimed towards me. Because they all hate us.
This. My parents have been up here 30 years this year, are both now retired and have no intention of ever leaving!

It's ridiculous. Imagine if the word for "French" and the word for "vintage Champagne" sounded almost identical, and you accidentally referred to a French person as something they proudly export round the world and which is a byword for quality and refinement. They'd smile and think ah, you haven't got the hang of the language yet... The Scots act like you just took a dump on the grave of Robert Burns
May I also point out that the Scotch farming industry has received EU money to promote Scotch beef and Scotch lamb.

So to summarise, the Scots don't hate the English unless you act the dickhead.

End of thread

Och no.
I lived and worked in Dumfries for 8 months, I did on a couple of occasions overhear the expression "English Bastards" between Sweaties people talking in a pub. One of those times it was about local house prices, the other about Rugby (England had just won the Rugby World Cup 2003?). Whilst there I didn't receive any hostility at all for being English by anybody, individually or otherwise. So, to me I think it's possibly just a 'default' by people in a group, (especially when it comes to the England & sport) a way of belonging perhaps, that you must outwardly 'hate' the English, when the reality is (individually) they don't all hate you for being English, unless (as you say) you do act like a dickhead, or maybe have a 'Southern' accent. ;) Just my view, might be wrong.

Depends where you go. Central belt and urban areas there are a lot of twats, but I've never had any grief out in the sticks.
