Do Americans Celebrate Easter ?

Quite suprised really. The biggest date in the Christian calendar, you'd think a country like the USA would go to town on it.

They don't like giving hols out over there though do they.

Good Friday is a holiday in Canada, Easter Monday is a holiday for mostly the public sector, everybody else works.

Sunday is more important because it's the day of Christ resurrection. I remember there was an Amercian girl working with us who thought it was odd that over here in Ireland Good Friday is celebrated more so than Easter Sunday. She said the Christain community mourned Jesus death more than celebrated his raising from the dead.

They again us Irish love a good wake!;)

Really? I work for a large US investment bank and USD is most definitely trading tomorrow.

I've had the following email from 4 different organisations:

Please note that there will be no trading on Friday, April 22, 2011, as all U.S. stock markets will be closed in observance of Good Friday.

They don't get Good Friday off. Even the Christain don't take it off. The same with Christmas. They get Christmas Day off and thats it.

I'm off, as is everyone else I know around here. Loads of Good Friday BBQs going on tomorrow.

Oh, and my company closes for a week at Christmas, though that's unusual, most just have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, though just about everyone will tag a couple of days on to that.

Is it up to the companies themselves to take the day off? Do the public sector close?

Banks, post offices, local state and federal offices are closed.
I work for none of these and don't get good Friday or easter Monday off. Nor do I get MLK or Presidents' day but I do get Thanksgiving Friday and Christmas Eve so it's up to the companies what you get.

I always say that I love living here for many reasons but they are really stingy with their bank holidays and 'vacation' time. Even people with modest income used to take two weeks off back home, here you won't get much more than that each year and you very rarely hear of anyone going away anywhere for two weeks.

Here in Norway they have 20 Public holidays and usually about 6-7 weeks off in the Summer!
They love their family time, got the right idea in my opinion like.

The Yanks stole Easter and turned it into a chocolate egg orgy for their already overweight kids.
