Haven't looked at it mate but probably needs more Morris and Crossfade or it's a dead rubba

Just looking at some of the replies on here always makes an interesting read no matter what timeframe you are from or what music you were into. That said I personally think the likes of the Havana, chambers, liberties etc were a total different scene to the likes of the blue monkey, venue after dark, etc. Not really one for the colloseum type stuff and for me this was when a new scene came in and for me was a bit on the cheesy tip.

Awful those after dark tapes imo. Music is very cheap and nasty.

for me, the monkey peaked in the summer 91. after that, i was seeing lads in there, who a year or so before you'd have seen out drinking locally when i was tripping, and they'd be fighting and spewing up all over. "didn't kna yea were into this?". i was often met with, as someone was topless and stinking of vicks. good that they were having their eyes open, but i doubt that many brains were expanding. a prime example was one character who earlier in the year was in there in jeans, dress jacket, shoes and perfect hair. a few months later, he was dressed up like some cartoon character and doing his best John McCririck impression. the end of the night tune went from something like "sound of eden" or "don't mess with this beat" or "the flasher", to KWS "please don't go".

Multi coloured gym wear was the end of the rd for me. Unfortunately saw the blue monkey well before any of that carry on. Now the tops off too what on earth. Don’t get me wrong here I’m all into love peace and unity, however I feel man on man skin sweat is a bridge too far for me. I kept my top on by the way. And vicks what was all that about. I too recall many people from around the town late eighties who were in places like Bentleys who was used to look at the likes of myself with my desert boots on going to the butterloggie as some kind of creature from another planet,,,,,,,,only for a year or 2 to pass and they were in the blue monkey dressed up like they had just finished work at Billy Smarts circus.

Smokey Joe was a pally with a mate of mine.

We were all at an all nighter and he was that off his nut behind the decks he had to ask my mate to take over for a while.

I wasn't that surprised as he'd had mare than I had and my eyes were rolling back like reels on a fruit machine!

lovely fella

remember being back in a flat up chester road after they'd done a friday at ku (short lived) back end of 91

"these e's don't last very long. but when they do. they're lovely". word for word.;)

The summer of 91 was the only time I went.
I remember someone smearing Vicks on my face on the spiral staircase as I was looking up at the lights through closed eyelids and thinking, ‘now that’s delightful‘.

there's another docu in waiting for "wear fm" (imo) and it was a missing chapter in "two monkeys".

i think wear fm came into being, summer/autumn 1990? i only became aware of it, through a lass i was seeing from seaburn. the signal wasn't too great in peterlee  a proper coat hanger and wire, move the aerial around the room, until you got a half decent reception. possibly the only way to get a hold of this type of music then, was from lads who were working away in different parts of the country (or in the army), or from the butterloggie raves in eston. very few people had a set of technics at home and if they did have a set of decks, were still finding their feet on how to mix. a few exceptions of course and notably, the ones mentioned and who were looking after the specialist 'dance' shows on wear fm.

monday night was "blackout" with howie and slp. howie passed away a couple of years ago, but slp is still living and bouncing about newcastle
tuesday night was "ultra vibes" with smoove, tubes and crew. followed by "doomsville", which was maz and stu?
wednesday night was "gay to gay" with mega sal and sadie
thursday night was "top rankin" with huey and binni. which then brought on dom, dj dom and master reece
friday night was howie's chart show" and then "crimewatch", with a rotating cast of many . so smokey joe, b jam, toby, craig e mac, surf e (apologies to anyone i've missed)

monday nights changed, maybe late 91? howie's ego and some of his studio guests, meant he went the journey. spen and yoz, took over the decks, whilst mick clarke and ian wright (sr2), looked after the chat and occasionally, ian went on the decks. i'm sure plenty of people off here will know spen and yoz. there are a couple of yoz's mixes on my soundcloud. I doubt there were many people in the early 90's who were able to do the turntable tricks of scratching and transforming, that yoz was doing, with the music he was playing. one tape in particular, still has me scratching my head, as to how he was doing it - and this is 28 plus years later. both are still playing - spen's does the Havana reunions in 'boro and yoz, continues to make music and dj.

personally, i used to religiously listen to and tape the monday night "blackout" from late 90 until summer 91. great tunes and the chat was funny. mixing wise, not the greatest!. thursday night, was where the quality was (at that time) for me. binni was and still is, a superb selector and dj. there's at least one of his mixes from this era, on my soundcloud page. very talented!!. jesus loves the acid / blue monday, being a stand out. i was more into the belgian stuff / R&S / techno, so what he was playing was right up my street.

huey's maybe in london? but the majority of the others are still in the north east, or able to be tracked down.

the radio station played a MASSIVE part in what took place in the early 90's. without a doubt, as regards the blue monkey
Spot on post!! Takes me back in time. :)

Wear FM was ground breaking at the time, it brought the rawness and excitement of that of pirate radio but in a legal way.
MC Lee was great on the 'Top Ranking night. I loved when he kept shouting out "Red eye, never die" in reference to all the stonner's listening.

When Wear FM was shut, I became part of a group that were applying to reopen the station under a new licence and a new name and we had quite a few meetings at the university. We had everything in place nearly, all roles were sorted out, technicians, marketing, presenters, DJ's, etc. I was going to do a soul and funk night on Friday nights, from 9 till 1 am and looking forward to it. But then some external matters made it all fall through.
