Dissertation Work

In the next few weeks/months I am going to be starting my dissertation into mini communities inside Sunderland AFC. Alongside one of the supporters branches I would like to use the RTG messageboard. How would I go about gettin permission to speak to it's members etc... or would it just be a case of making a new thread on one of the forums and asking people to register there interest.
