Dissent shouldn't be a sending off

Red card for dissent ruins the game without anyone being hurt. Should be a hefty fine, not a red. Happens all the time with players hollering in the ref's face with no action taken, often ref just laughs it off.

Ref should be more bothered about booking players for pulling back and kicking the ball away.

Its a 10min sin bin in none league footy, decent length of time to be off the pitch as a punishment, but not ruining the match as eventually it’ll be 11v11 again

I can see both sides. Dan knew he was on a yellow and shouldn’t have confronted the ref. The ref should have made it clear what was acceptable to the managers pre match. Dan should have told Luke his thoughts and let him ask the ref about it as captain.

On the other hand, if he was sent off for saying “f***ing” is it so bad? Where do you draw the line? Bloody, really actually, very? In the last 24 hours I have watched Teachers, Upright, Colin from Accounts and Tim Minchin and it is probably the most used word in all of those.

I'm all for cards being given for genuine dissent, but my mouth was agog when the commentator said it was for saying it's a f***ing foul  absolutely mental.

love to know what he said that warranted a booking. if the ref booked everyone who swore at him during the game he's be the only one left on the field after 90 minutes

Exactly. Roberts later on abused the ref and linesman, moving his arms the lot. Didn't get a card.

Why do refs need protecting? What are they children? They meltdown and crumble when someone swears at them? Why is their sensitivity more important than the reason everyone is there for, the football? Of course people are going to have an emotional reaction to your decisions, its absolutely human, the game is very important to them. I feel like the refs make the game more about them than the football, they should be a minor part of the game and rarely mentioned but often they are the centre of it and discussions. I usually dislike anyone who seeks authority, they are never good people to be around, they are often self-important, antagonistic, weak individuals who would get walked all over without their arbitrary titles.

The sooner we have an AI robot reffing that is impartial, unbiased, and emotionless the better.

Plus the players that have been on 'the naughty chair' will have learned a lesson 🙄

Wayne Rooney wouldn't have finished half the games he played .....you didn't have to be a lip reader.

*Although playing for Man Utd and Sir Alex 😎

Could have easily been sent off for the first yellow. Stupidly high tackle!

It was very slow, never endangering the player, it was awkward and was a yellow but never dangerous simply because of pace of challenge. There are more dangerous trips to stop a break

I like this solution

I didn't see it like that. His foot was off the ground. Players know this. It was reckless imo

You can see him walking towards the ref with his arms out. That’s a fact actually
What he said is aimed at the referee. He should know better when already booked.
You can try and Eden’s him all you like but it’s stupidity on his part.
The ref was shite though.

People are arguing that it’s a clear cut decision, when in reality, the ref was shite, he gave us nowt, but Dan Neil, who could have been sent off for his first booking, Hasn’t got the sense to keep his head down and avoid a referee who’s clearly not up to the job. Instead he was storming across the pitch in a paddy, and got booked for it.

All in all, a waste of Saturday afternoon.

Could the ref not had called him over and said swear at me again and you get a yellow, one and only warning.
In my way of understanding it, Dan Neil did not swear AT the Ref

He just used a swear word, in exasperation, as that Ref must have let at least half a dozen fouls on Clark just go - occasionally giving us a free kick but not giving yellow cards for blatant, intentional fouling

Just goes to show he knows nothing about the game - Boro came out intending to block Clark off the park and he basically sat back and let them

Then when Dan Neil pointed out yet another foul he had let pass, this clown decided to ruin the match by sending him off.

Are you seriously telling me that on the half a dozen occasions Boro players argued with and around him none of them swore?

Foul and abusive language directed towards the referee goes unpunished no matter what league they are in. Unfortunately it rarely penalised like every other incident it depends a which referee is in charge.

True

But most referees would understand the difference between

Swearing “that was a bastad corner”

And been sworn at “you are a cheating bastad Ref - did they pay you?”

The first nowt

The second yellow or even straight red

I agree to an extent.

The dissent itself wasn’t a red, was a yellow.

I’ve been booked for dissent myself twice. Both times it was justified.

Shouting that it wasn’t a foul from 20 yards back, isn’t a yellow.

In a recent Leicester match having, been penalised for a foul Vardy told the referee to F 'Off, then repeated it. The referee chose to ignore it whereas another may have taken exception to it. The rules are there but are not being adhered to.
