Disrespect towards Referees.

I've ref'd my kids game....If the local League don't supply then the home team have to ref.....
my first game....I had to award a penalty against my own lad for handball..(he's still going on about it)....then awarded a penna against the other team....on further discussion with the linesman it was deemed not a handball so I retracted my decision....by this point my own lads are giving me shite....then one of our lads bundled over in the area, I award a penalty....in the furor he's screaming as he's fractured his wrist....they scored the penna and won...then I blew the final whistle....then it started to thunder a lightning and piss down overhead and still had parents from the other team asking about the penalty I'd awarded because their player had literally Ice hockey challenged our player in the box.....
that first pint didn't even touch the sides..

it's hard...
Tbf mate it was never a penalty fair enough his 2 feet were off the floor and it connected with his neck but it was very very soft :).

I've run the line for my lads team a few times. It's only bairns so the general rule is to ignore offsides (unless they are absolutely blatent) and focus on who gets the throw in, and goal kick/corner decisions... plus looking out for any unsporting behaviour.

Last time I did it, I gave a corner to the "opposition". I was 3 feet away, and it was a corner. No doubt about it. A few mins from the end and they score.

A dad I didn't know came over and confronted me about why I'd given the corner against his lad when "I could see from the half way line it was a goal kick".

I gave him the flag and said
"With eyesight like that, you're the right man to do the next one" and I walked off.

He backed down pretty quick.

It amazes me that anyone would want to be a ref/linesman

I can guarantee that anyone on here who thinks refs are sh*t would change their mind if they tried their hand at a Sunday league game. People don't seem to get close to appreciating how difficult it is.

It's very difficult.
But it could be made easier with some adaptions to the game.

Firstly I think we need to empower Linesmen. They're technically "assistant referees" but how often do you see them flag fouls that the ref misses? If you watch the NFL, their equivalent to linesmen are more involved. They flag up foul play all the time and are listened to.

We have 3 officials on a pitch and seem to rely on 1 to do everything. I've even seen Linesmen flag after the ref has decided which way a free kick goes, when the incident was right in front of the Linesman. It should be the other way around, the ref should be calling on his "assistants" to actually assist, if they're in a better position.

And we need to clamp down on this hounding of refs by players. It's so easy to do as well. At the start of the season players are told that the only people who can speak to a ref are the players involved in an incident, unless the ref decides otherwise. Yellow card for anyone else, and a second if they do it twice. You'd get a week or two of crazy games in the short term, but a better sport in the long term. You'd also get better referees as well

Finally we need to punish play acting and "simulation". Starting with commentators calling out play acting/time wasting ad "cheating" rather than "managing the game" would be a good start.

absolute chaos at times
Haha bet its put you off for life talk about a baptism of fire ( I couldn't do it ) .
word for word I said to Mrs.73 'That was a f***ing baptism of fire'

The issue stems around the Premier League being worth so much and being a business model. The Premier don't want to "de-value" their business model by having sin-bins or numerous players being sent off for shouting at a referee.
Until the Premier League actively show more support to referees nothing will change.

I am all in support of referees numerous examples of where bans should have been given:
1) Van Dyke v Newcastle - Screaming at the referee - was given a 1match ban, should have been a lot more.
2) Arteta when the ball did or didnt cross the line depending on where you looked at it and Arteta went on ridiculously and Arsenal then released a statement defending the way he went on which was wrong
3) Haaland when he screams at the referee he should have been sent off and wasn't, yet the week before Lewis Dunk was shown a red card for dissent (rightly).

There’s going to be a problem as long as there’s no video or audio feedback like in rugby. Cards don’t work as examples by Dan Neil. Sun bins are the only option 10mins a pop or 20 for haaland style rants.

Respect is something earned not given and most refs just don’t deserve any. So many are simply terrible and/or biased in their decisions, some of there decisions can decide a teams season or even a player’s career, of course people are going to get angry when they mess up, especially when in most instances they are zero consequences to their actions. You can sometimes understand when poor decisions go against both sides but far too often the same teams get the same decisions for and against them.

I can never understand why we don’t try and attract better refs from around the world, we do it with managers and players. Create some real competition for places and make refs understand poor performance will lead to demotion or dismissal and hopefully reduce ref bias too.

Obviously not talking about the refs who deal with local matches.

We'd best cancel the game then because the standard isn't going to get any better. Champions League / World Cup / Euros etc - you name it, football is and always will be littered with incorrect calls. You can throw money at it, get ex pros in, do whatever you like, the standard isn't going to improve.

Find a league in the world where fans think the refs do a good job. It doesn't exist!

You don’t think having more competition, increasing your recruitment pool and employing officials with less bias would make any improvement?

Less bias? There's no evidence of that whatsoever apart from the confirmation bias in your head.

We already have 2 referees on the 30 man elite list and the remainder are employed in their own leagues. Even the two on the elite list (Oliver and Taylor) who are routinely castigated as being sg*t and useless.

Bring in any of the world elites and they'd also be called useless and sh*t within weeks of PL appearances.

There's a saying in the forces - "You salute the rank, not the person". In other words, you salute and show respect whatever you think about that officer.

Similar here. Respect should be automatic for his position, not the man. Obviously, you can think whatever you like. Just don't voice it on the pitch.
