Disney world Florida

Just got back last week. Spent 10 days there staying in one of the Universal hotels.

Family of 3 spent just shy of £3k on food and drinks plus Ubers to the Disney parks and nights out. It was bloody expensive mind - bog standard Italian type meal about £150. Drinks mostly $11/12 a pint so didn’t really have many heavy nights albeit I couldn’t be bothered anyway having spent the entire day walking in stifling heat and queuing for rides.

Started off politely tipping 10-15% but by the end only tipped if the server deserved it as some of the service was pretty abysmal.

Had the universal express pass through the hotel which was a godsend so never really had to queue. Disney was the opposite and queues absolutely huge. Ended up paying extra for the fast pass there so more money spent.

Universal do free water through their fizzy pop machines which was spot on and just paid the $10 per day for the unlimited pop for the boy.

All in all very good holiday which the boy loved but we won’t be going back in a hurry

Had a row with a barman in Key west, he was waiting for a tip after just taking the tops off of 2 bottles of Budweiser 🤨

I asked for a bottle of wine at the hotel bar , he turned around got one out of the fridge , I had to ask for 4 glasses which resulted in an audible sigh as he got them and he had the nerve to demand an $8 tip on a $40 purchase.

He got told clearly that i only tip for good service and not where it’s obviously a bit of a chore , if he wasn’t happy I would discuss his attitude with his manager.

He never served me again.

Disneyland Anaheim ( Thrown out)
Went with my wife and daughter, had a great time.
Two weeks later we were back in Los Angeles to come home, had a spare day and went back to the Park
The US schools had gone back after the summer break so the place with quite.
All the big rides were closed or down for maintenance.
Complained to a ride operator we had paid the same price. Bloke in a Blazer and tie turned up with security and escorted out of the door with a refund.

I would feel like a dick if I didn't tip a couple of dollars for that tbh.
So you’d pay someone £1.70 JUST remove two bottle lids for you having alread paid probably £12 for 2 bottles of shit lager that would have cost you £6 back in England, and probably cost the bar in question £2 max (or £1 at tesco back in England).

People have lost their minds post covid now they have a sniff of freedom, i’m sure of it.

Take it none of the posters here are worried about paying £400 a month gas & leccy shortly are they?

Think the secret is already out mate, vast majority at Duinrell this year were English, closely followed by Irish. All the restaurants in town were full most nights for this reason (Germans and Dutch tend to barbecue more). It’s the first time this has been the case, English have always been the minority in our previous visits - I kind of liked it that way to be honest. It was 30+ when we were there - a bit uncomfortable to say the least with no air conditioning!!

Might have a look at those other places you have recommended. My kids love Duinrell and particularly Tikibad but the rides are getting a bit lightweight for them now, but I like Netherlands and Germany as places to visit and like to get round the area - had a mooch to Rotterdam this year to take in a Feyenoord match

We've only been in April or May previously and there weren't that many British on site. Made no difference to us but I know what you mean about preferring it not to be.

What did you stay in?
We're staying in the Lodge Tents again this October. Was quite cold in it when sleeping during one of our trips so expect it will be this time as well. Easy to wrap up warm than to try and cool down though.

Netherlands and Germany are great countries visit agree.

We also went Toverland on one of the trips which was quite good but again is a bit tame barring a couple of rides.

Europa Park is superb though. Love to take the kids back there some day. We did it on the way down to Lake Garda. Stopped off for a couple of nights before continuing the drive down.

I've tipped bartenders for every drink every time I've been there over the last 20+ years.

I've had loads of buybacks too. It's expected there and you look like a dick if you don't. I know it's a difficult concept to us as we just don't do it here.

Yeah but when they are pulling the piss for the price of the product they are selling you it’s just beyond a joke really.

Fair enough years ago but they are taking the piss in America now. Ever been to an event? $15 a can of beer  $20 a burger?!

No, I haven't been since 2020. Those prices sound crazy.
If you're at Disney and you want to drink without being expected to tip then you can order from a quick serve. It's only about $8-9 for a pint too.

We stay in the big lodges, or Duingalows, at the back of the park. They’re really good although they are looking a little dated now, only problem this year was the heat. When we first got into the lodge the cleaners had left the windows shut and curtains open so it was 33 degrees inside - took about a day to get the temperature down to something almost tolerable. To be fair though, it has been a freak summer in that respect!

I remember the days back in 2008-2015 when the prices were class everything in Orlando was half price due to the exchange rate

We used to take a half empty case with us and buy all sorts at the outlets to bring back

Eating out was class as well
These are my memories too. Getting trainers that were £90 here (£140 now) for $40 in outlets. Food & drink was a snip too. Hotels, events, car hire.

Wtf has gone on over there  once the covid freedom honeymoon period wears off, the furlough savings runs out & the cost of living kicks in so many of these places charging through the nose will be in for a big shock.

You forgot Americans can get paid a lot more than us, when you compare some jobs to jobs.

We were at the LA Dodgers in April and paid $37 for 2 cans of IPA. It wasn’t even that nice.
Can of cheap beer was about £6.50 at Wembley.
IPA would be at least double that to buy in (comparing at supermarket prices) . So that's £26 for two at least. That's over $30.

So not outrageous?

However you dress it up it is outrageous like.

I paid $48 for 2 beers and 2 bottles of water in Madison Square Garden 3 years ago. Had $40 in my hand and did a kind of double take before embarrassingly fishing round for more notes in my pocket
